Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Lisa Nandy knows what a woman is, wants to protect them, but also "twaw"?

When I was doing my GCSEs, I had a maths tutor. She would sit with me and patiently go over and over a problem until I had an "OHHHHH!!!!" moment where everything suddenly fell into place, like a camera going into sharp focus.

That's how I feel about Lisa Nandy's inability to see the blatant nonsense of her position when she says stuff like this in the same breath:

“...We’ve failed a lot of women over recent years....It gives the green light to people who harass women"...She says she would allow a committee of women to determine what harassment is..."

"I care deeply about safe spaces for women. I know from personal experience there is a generation of women who fought very hard to create and protect safe spaces, that it matters....But that [debate] has to start with the recognition that trans men are men, trans women are women...”

She is so incredibly, tantalisingly close to having the penny drop, but inexplicably refuses to go there.

(Comments above are snipped for brevity. Full quotes are in the linked article: www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/feb/29/lisa-nandy-if-labour-got-things-right-how-did-we-lose-so-badly-interview )

It’s so frustrating isn’t it.

PhonicTheHedgehog · 01/03/2020 13:12

Is she confused? Does she think that trans men are people that are born male? I used to think that until finding you all.

Mockersisrightasusual · 01/03/2020 13:14

In what universe does a debate have to start with a conclusion?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 01/03/2020 13:14

The very crossmaking part is that she's all "yeah, debate, great!...But only as long as everyone agrees with my POV"

That isn't how debate works, Lisa. You don't say "this house believes that cats are better than dogs and that's the end of it, thank you and goodnight!"

that [debate] has to start with the recognition that trans men are men, trans women are women...

...making ‘women’s spaces’ meaningless

Chiochan · 01/03/2020 13:50

chasing votes, nothing more, nothing less.
doubt she gives a shit either way tbh

HermioneWeasley · 01/03/2020 13:52

She knows exactly what she’s doing, she just doesn’t care

Mockerswithnoknockers · 01/03/2020 13:55

If she wants to chase votes and play the Northern Card, she could start by calling a spade a bloody shovel.

fascinated · 01/03/2020 13:58

Is it that she thinks all transwomen are harmless hapless homosexuals possibly even without bits hence no threat to women? I used to think that.

Justhadathought · 01/03/2020 14:03

Eventually the trans crowd will turn on her too.....when she back pedals just a little bit too much....Inevitable.

Devlesko · 01/03/2020 14:09

She's our MP, she isn't up to much. Sits on the fence about women's issues.
The penny won't drop, and she won't go there because she doesn't believe it, really.
Like any of the others she'll say anything to get your vote.
She was my favourite and I used to admire her, but she just hasn't any conviction in the issues that matter. Such a shame.

ThePurported · 01/03/2020 14:18

she would allow a committee of women to determine what harassment is

Really, how generous. Unfortunately in Nandyland these committee women could be males with special gender identities who are oblivious to how women experience harassment. Like that transwoman David in the Telegraph, who feels that he is now entitled to use women's loos because he and his penis identify as female.

Justhadathought · 01/03/2020 14:19

She's our MP, she isn't up to much. Sits on the fence about women's issues

Can you give some examples?

Have to say I used to see her as future leadership material.......but can't forgive her for her lack of integrity on this issue.

flowery · 01/03/2020 14:26

I think some people are forgetting what a debate actually IS. Which is rather worrying from someone who does that as their, you know, job.

How can a debate start from the premise that one side of it is correct?

It’s like debating the existence of God from the starting point that God is real, end of.

Devlesko · 01/03/2020 14:38

It's hard to say, but on one hand she seems to support issues, but then when it comes to putting her money where her mouth is, she backs out.
As i say, she's our MP, so it's little things at local level.
She's become well known for it round here, don't get me wrong, I used to support her.
She seemed happy to support wc northern people but when it comes down to it we know she wouldn't support the unions, despite her background.

flowery · 01/03/2020 14:39

Actually that’s a bad analogy as I reckon a much higher percentage of the population believe in God than believe biological sex isn’t real.

It’s like a ‘debate’ between Position A (held by 99% of the population) and Position B (held by 1% of the population) starting from the premise that Position B is correct and cannot be deviated from. 🤯

OddBoots · 01/03/2020 15:28

A scary number of people (and especially scary when it is MPs) allow themselves to be painted into a corner insidious stroke by insidious stroke and can't work out how to get out once they engage their reasoning.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 01/03/2020 16:02

It’s like debating the existence of God from the starting point that God is real, end of.

Don't worry, we had those debates at school, and I got detention for blasphemy.

Anyways, Nandy-Panderer reminds me a lot of Thabo Mbeki: Privilged child of leftie royalty, so soaked in right-on Sussex Uni thought that he could not acknowledge the simple fact that HIV rather than racism caused AIDS.

zanahoria · 01/03/2020 16:09

She wants a debate but that debate must start with everyone agreeing with her

and she still stands by the pledge to purge for dissenters

Coyoacan · 01/03/2020 16:26

In the end she is just a run-of-the-mill politician who is only in it for the salary and the prestige. They abound all over the world. Even if it weren't an issue that is crucially important for women's rights and the safeguarding children, it shows what type of person she is and that is not leadership material.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 01/03/2020 16:27

Run of t'mill, if you don't mind.

Coyoacan · 01/03/2020 16:50

Mockerswithnoknockers Grin

LynnSchmob · 01/03/2020 17:00

I won’t vote for any politician that states TWAW. Fuck em.

WhatAGreatDay · 01/03/2020 17:08

LynnSchmob I also won't vote for anyone who states TWAW. It's a total dealbreaker for me.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 01/03/2020 17:39

People at Labour HQ have shit themselves with how badly this leadership contest is going down. The YouGov polls of member voting intension are interesting, to say the least (Angela Rayner has dropped 25% in either a week or two weeks? Would have to check dates.

I’ve heard of at least 4 MPs who are absolutely livid at contenders for saying such nonsensical bullshit on gender issues, none of whom you would expect. At least one more seems to be tentatively revealing their position on twitter in real time.
