So I was driving back from dropping DS and this topic came on the radio. A Dr who is head of Transgender surgery in Ireland. He said that in 2012 they had 50 referrals a year. now it is 300. When asked why he said "for as long as people have existed, there have been CIS people, like you and I, and Trans people, and up to now, it has been extremely dangerous for those Trans people to change gender. But now they can>". By this point I had nearly crashed the car. This is a man who, by his own admission has spend the guts of more than a decade post med school, training and yet he believes there is such a thing as a CIS person and a Trans person.
We need to be inclusive ....
In 2012 it was people in their 30's and 40's - now it is mostly young people, late teens, early 20's. There is no adolescent service yet - but that is a shame. (yes that's what he said).
There is an atmosphere of confusion and fear in the media (according to him).
The evidence is not well developed. To be fair the interviewer is good.
There is loads here - he wants society to be more gender inclusive so Trans people do not suffer.
You can get it on the RTE website.
