Janice Turner talking to Matt Chorley about the Labour trans pledges, but also gets in about TRA tactics and mentions sport, loos and the female penis. I thought she was brilliant.

Thanks so much for this, yes, she was great. Thought it was interesting how the male speakers seemed surprised by some of the things she was saying were happening.

Awning10 · 26/02/2020 17:59

It starts at around 25mins.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 26/02/2020 18:20

It was interesting that the Jason Stein who worked, I think, as a government advisor in the Womens and equalities department said they tried to focus on the people who went through the full transition "had surgery etc". Do those in government know that they are sanctioning female penises into womens spaces?

CriticalCondition · 26/02/2020 18:56

She's absolutely brilliant on this. Really worth listening to and thank you very much for sharing OP.

I've read her columns but not heard her speak before and she's very, very good - clear, calm and very articulate. When radio or TV want someone to comment on this issue, they should be calling her. She should be appearing on Newsnight and Radio 4.

She got in loads of stuff but also got right to the core of it. That women have things like loos and female sports so they can have a public life. That these things exist for a reason and that self ID is a backlash pretending to be progressive.

Matthew Parris laughed and sounded genuinely incredulous when she said the insanity extends to having to talk about 'the female penis'.

Keep up with the sunlight, Janice. If you're reading this, a huge thank you.

BINtersectionalFeminism · 26/02/2020 19:41

I agree Critical I was listening whilst out walking and I nearly punched the air at one point - she just seemed to get so much in so quickly. It also helped not having a debate or a woke bloke speaking against her as is usually the way for women speaking about this.

That was brilliant by Janice Turner.

I did some googling about female penises - according to Indya Moore last year, www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/02/19/pose-indya-moore-trans-penises-biologically-female/ "if a woman has a penis, her penis is a biologically female penis" and claiming that trans women are biological women with biological female penises.

Absolutely mad stuff. But if it had been part of the Labour trans pledge then I bet Nandy would still have signed up to it.

Languishingfemale · 26/02/2020 19:43

I've seen Matthew Parris tiptoe round the issue with a couple of anxious comments but he's still sitting on the fence (in public).

boatyardblues · 26/02/2020 19:43

Janice - You are fantastic. That was terrific. Great to hear a respectful panel give a woman space to speak and get her points across too.

OhHolyJesus · 26/02/2020 19:56

The Times subscription is proving its well worth every penny for Turner alone.

Thanks OP, will listen.

StarintheMorning · 26/02/2020 20:00

Janice is brilliant, and funny with it! Thanks for bringing this to my attention OP, I hadn’t heard of this podcast, I will listen on one of my runs each week.

Binterested · 26/02/2020 20:16

Loved hearing Janice and putting a voice to the words. Matthew Parris has been tiptoeing around this, as pp have said, but it sounds like he really didn’t understand that he’s supposed to acknowledge the female penis now. And of course by extension, the male vagina. And we know that, as a gay man, he must not reject those males who have a vagina but accept them as sexual partners. I know men get a free pass on that side of things generally but still, it would be great to hear his views on that 😄

StillWeRise · 26/02/2020 21:45

that Indya moore article reaches truly mind boggling levels of bat shittery

testing987654321 · 26/02/2020 22:40

Great to hear the support Janice is getting. She's so clear and sane, after all the weirdness going on the Labour Party that was refreshing to listen to.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/02/2020 07:09

That Pink News article!

“Dear cis people, I hope you one day evolve beyond penises and vaginas”

I have no words.

Kit19 · 27/02/2020 07:16

That’s one of the things I don’t get. The idea that we’re so eewwww because we talk about opposite and same sex attraction & that they’re on a higher plane bevatse they’re all about gender & genitals don’t matter. Bluntly I’m a straight woman and I’d no more stick my finger or face in someone’s fanny than I’d headbut a wall because I’m heterosexual. All this we don’t see penises and vaginas is bull shit!!! The idea that the gay men who seem to run penis news are munching away on manginas is bollocks! They’re into cocks so stop with the bloody ridiculous saintly we don’t see penises malarkey

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 27/02/2020 11:48

Janice was excellent as always. Less so Mathew Parris. His contribution felt at times as if he was trying to prevent Janice from telling any more truths. He twice moved the conversation away when she was on a roll.

I can't tell if it was straightforward misogyny or something more deliberate though.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/02/2020 12:47

Bit of both, I expect. They’re not mutually exclusive, unfortunately.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 27/02/2020 14:01

All this 'female penis' stuff - does anyone actually buy it? I'm heterosexual, pretty much against my own will, but your sexuality is not something you can ignore just to be politically correct. Speaking personally, it's hormonally driven, my time of the month comes and all of a sudden I want a big hulking bloke to build me a cabinet and go captain caveman on me in the bedroom. It's not big or clever (and I can build my own cabinet!), it's just seemingly the way I'm wired. I have a lot of sympathy for trans men, but I don't want to deal with a 'male vagina', nor do I generally find them 'my type' (height, build etc). What kind of creepy tactics are these anyway, trying to guilt trip people into having sex with those they're not attracted to? Don't get me wrong, trans men can be very good-looking and I'm sure there are other women out there who wouldn't mind, that's all well and good, but people want what they want - since when has sexual attraction been logical?! This is PUA thinking, that you can use various abusive tactics to trick someone into sleeping with you.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 27/02/2020 14:10

Sorry, I realize I'm going over old ground there, I just genuinely wonder if anyone really believes it.
