Men's stay intact. Obviously.

So there are going to be three locked cubicles with an additional accessible loo. Surely this is good.

The female loos is the space being used, then once opened the men's will close and be taken out.

Ah OK, I read it as men's staying open. More haste less speed!

Ridiculous. Hardly anyone wants these gender neutral toilets.

FrostyGirl66 · 22/02/2020 16:52

I've been on holiday in Devon countless times and gender neutral, individually lockable public toilets are normal. It didn't even occur to me to feel offended or that my privacy was being invaded. If anything, it was more private.

dudsville · 22/02/2020 16:56

In our local park there are individual toilet rooms, entirely self enclosed with the sink and all, room for a buggy or wheel chair, good lock on the door. They aren't men's and women's. They are great in many ways. Only problem is you do need to be desperate as they are not clean.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 22/02/2020 17:04

I can’t remember the last time I saw a public toilet in any parks near me. They’ve been turned into mini shops, most sell fast food Confused

WomanBornNotWorn · 22/02/2020 17:29

Just cast my no vote.

A great reason not to allow men access to space where women are vulnerable and private - Molka spy cameras: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_camera_crime_in_South_Korea

dogmothertoanother · 22/02/2020 17:50

I worked somewhere in London with gender neutral toilets they had to make the first three cubicles men's due to the pissing on the seat, floor, walls. So the other 7 cubicles were for anyone. It always felt weird when bumping into a man coming out when you were entering.

Troels · 22/02/2020 17:52

Ridiculous.
So men need their own seperate space, but women being the lesser of the sexes, can share with men who want to use the ladies loos.

Newuser123123 · 22/02/2020 17:56

@troels sorry my second comment was incorrect I think. They're maintaining the men's temporarily then getting rid of them.

How do they get the money to do,this. Is Brighton co7ncil very rich ?

moctodtensmum · 22/02/2020 18:11

No the council is not rich. But this is not work being done in order to cater for non binary etc people. It’s work desperately needed as the current toilets are ancient and horrid. By getting rid of the mens’ toilets and making the four other toilets gender neutral they can now have a new cafe. So you get refurbished toilets for both sexes, a new cafe, and safer toilets as they are accessed through the cafe.

Win win.

Unless you have knee jerk reactions and like to criticise plans not local to you which you don’t understand.

Procrastinator2 · 22/02/2020 18:39

I imagine women might stop in the cafe so their children can play in the nearby playground. Then will now have to accompany their children to the toilet to make sure there are no, what my mother would have called peculiar men, in the toilet area.

HopefulFor2020 · 22/02/2020 19:19

Then will now have to accompany their children to the toilet to make sure there are no, what my mother would have called peculiar men, in the toilet area.

Those particular toilets have a VERY dodgy reputation for 'peculiar men' especially recently so I'm pleased to hear that they will be doing this. My DS is of an age where we're both uncomfortable with him using the ladies but there's NO WAY I'd let him use the men's in that park.

I think the choice of refurbishing the ladies is more to do with the placement of the toilets being more logistical rather than letting the men keep theirs. And the closest ladies is less than a minute away in the museum over the road

TheGreatWave · 22/02/2020 19:26

Why is there anymore likely to be 'peculiar men' in a set up of 4 locked toilets in a row then the oft set up of the men's and ladies opposite each other?

WomanBornNotWorn · 22/02/2020 21:44

Interesting to watch the numbers go up

it’s not more private. I like it that women’s spaces are spaces where (almost) no man has been - and I worry about cameras.

moctodtensmum · 22/02/2020 22:52

@Procrastinator2 a man peculiar enough to wait in a loo for small children ain’t going to be stopped by a female sign on the door. Not when the toilets are isolated like the ones in the current set up. He may however be noticed by having to walk through a cafe to get there. So the new set up is safer than the current set up.

WomanBornNotWorn · 23/02/2020 00:50

Still going up

Katienlisa · 23/02/2020 07:00

I was at a conference recently were the charity running it had put gender neutral signs up and no one cared they still used the toilets because its a toilet who gives a toss if it gender neutral or not

PotholePalace · 23/02/2020 07:09

If it's a self-contained unit I don't see a problem. Are these toilets available when the cafe is shut, or or non-cafe owners?

PotholePalace · 23/02/2020 07:10

Oops. cafe users. Cafe owners would be a very specific group.
