Emails to Liz Truss and the response of the Government Equalities Office

I am going to publish an email trail here, which I believe shows just how far regulatory capture has gone. It shows how questions are ignored, words twisted, and the LAW, the Equality Act 2010 is wilfully misrepresented.
Here goes.....

I'm so sick of this shit. I think the time for letter writing is over.

Songsparrow · 17/02/2020 14:55

In awe of your letter writing abilities MrsSnippy

MrsSnippyPants · 17/02/2020 14:59

I tend to agree with you MrsMcWibble and if I lived anywhere near Parliament I think I would be chaining myself to some railings.

Sadly I don't, so I just keep banging out the letters and bringing up the subject with everyone I meet whenever I can.

But if anyone has any better ideas I'm in. I do wish we could follow the example of the women of Iceland.

Yeah. So many letters and so much time, for nothing.
I would chain myself to railings, but not with my aged bladder, and if I went on strike no one would notice.
I am open to suggestions though.

MrsSnippyPants · 17/02/2020 15:02

Thanks Song I get a lot of practice now Grin

By the way, if anyone wants to steal, adapt, plagiarise, have at it. I have gained so much inspiration from the women on here, and while I always think I could have done better (the second after I hit 'send' usually!) I can only even begin to write these emails and letters because of what I have learned here.

MrsSnippy
Your letters are brilliant. The responses are utterly dire. They are indicative of an obtuse failure to recognize that self id directly impacts women's rights to sex segregated spaces. The focus is once again on the tiny minority rather than 51 per cent of the population. How this lobby is able to wield such influence over policies across the political spectrum is profoundly undemocratic. I think you should contact any media sources you know. Who voted for this? It has zero public support

BovaryX · 17/02/2020 15:09

Whilst we are distracted by the Labour Party, this is the main battle

Absolutely.

Needmoresleep · 17/02/2020 15:13

Let’s hope the Tories have noted the knots RL-B, LN, et all have tied themselves into.

Go MrsSnippy go!

Perhaps time for those of us with Conservative MPs to write on similar lines. And perhaps the rest of us to write directly to the Minister. I know from my time in the Civil Service that it is the volume of correspondence that can make a difference.

MsMcWibble · 17/02/2020 15:16

Great letters though, MrsSnippy.

R0wantrees · 17/02/2020 15:18

I have wondered if letters sent by mail rather than email might be more likely to be seen by ministers.

Languishingfemale · 17/02/2020 15:20

Right Mrs Snippy . You have spurred me to write yet again to my (quietly) supportive Tory MP. He passes my letters on and I get the similar quality evasive, never answering the question responses from a variety of sources.

Onwards and upwards.....

Languishingfemale · 17/02/2020 15:21

R0wantrees
I email and put a copy in the post. I always get a formal written response.

Languishingfemale · 17/02/2020 15:22

Albeit a pointless blather about inclusivity, always ignoring the safeguarding question...

MedusasButterDish · 17/02/2020 15:28

I'm drafting a followup to my MP, who has ignored my (paper) letter and emailed copy.

Good tip on the MP-to-Minister relationship!

MrsSnippyPants · 17/02/2020 15:31

Writing can't hurt even though it does seem frustrating and pointless quite often.

I am trying to gauge how many MPs are for/against/ignorant so if anyone is willing to let me know how their MP responded so far I would very much appreciate it. No details necessary, even a vague outline would help. You can DM and I can give you an email address, or DM the @CUPWomensPledge Twitter account for complete anonymity.

Huggybear16 · 17/02/2020 15:35

I'm glad you're OK with the plagiarism - it'll get my email over to my MP much quicker that way Wink

TwoHeadedYellowBelliedHoleDig · 17/02/2020 15:35

I am pretty certain it states no such thing, but will be happy to be corrected. Ah MrsSnippy Grin

These people are responsible for these areas and they don't even know what's going on. I don't imagine my conservative MP gives a fuck though.

PreseaCombatir · 17/02/2020 15:45

Brilliant. I would steal, but I’m in a rock solid labour seat, so don’t think it would do much good unfortunately

OldCrone · 17/02/2020 16:00

Under the Equality Act, trans people should be treated according to the gender with which they identify.

I assume they're talking about this paragraph from the Equality Act 2010 Services, public functions and associations Statutory Code of Practice

13. 57 If a service provider provides single- or separate sex services for women and men, or provides services differently to women and men, they should treat transsexual people according to the gender role in which they present. However, the Act does permit the service provider to provide a different service or exclude a person from the service who is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or who has undergone gender reassignment. This will only be lawful where the exclusion is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

The legitimate aim would be to have a single-sex service.

BinkySodPlop · 17/02/2020 16:26

I have shamelessly copied large chunks of the original email and sent on (with some changes for local relevance) to my Conservative MP. I am not expecting great things. It's Steve Baker. Hmm

ThePurported · 17/02/2020 16:28

Great work Snippy Star

The Minister for Women can't find the time to meet concerned women while the government is considering the erasure of biological sex?

"...ensuring safe-spaces are safe for those using them."
So, women's spaces are for female people only, yes?

"Anybody seeking access to spaces such as toilets or changing rooms for malicious or violent purposes can and should be dealt with under existing criminal laws."
Yeah, after the event. "Don't worry, if you're raped you can still call the police."

endofthelinefinally · 17/02/2020 16:39

I wonder if any journalists are reading this thread?
I have been writing to my MP for 2 years, but there seems to be a policy of selective listening and responding.

NotMyFIrstTIme · 17/02/2020 16:39

Excellent letters, Snippy!

MedusasButterDish · 17/02/2020 17:00

As well as very, very low rates for both rape prosecutions and rape convictions.

Coyoacan · 17/02/2020 17:28

In awe of your letter writing abilities MrsSnippy

You really got to the crux of the matter.
