The late pornographic model/actor August Ames is listed on Wikipedia as having committed suicide after being cyber-bullied over her comments about refusing to do a scene with a man who had done same-sex scenes without subsequent STI testing. Instant messaging screenshots posted on Wednesday by Laila Mickelwait indicate that a sexual assault against August on a porn set operated by adult studio Brazzers may have contributed to her decision to take her own life. The screenshots tell a story of sexual and physical abuse and financial coercion that will be familiar to those who have followed the "GirlsDoPorn" lawsuit.
Brazzers is owned by Mindgeek, who also own Pornhub. Pornhub, as has been reported by the BBC recently, are notoriously slack about keeping rape and child abuse footage off their website even after it has been reported to them for removal. Looks like the knowing and willing abuse of women is a common factor in Mindgeek companies.
As an aside, Laila Mickelwait has started a petition to have Pornhub shut down, and frankly I think it's about time. Freedom of expression doesn't mean the right to abuse people nor the right to host footage of criminal acts, and they've had more than enough chances to get their house in order. Forum rules prohibit me from linking to the petition but I'm sure you all know how to web search.
