I don't think government buildings should be flying flags for his birthday

I had my wtf face on reading this
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7971917/Fury-councils-ordered-mark-Prince-Andrews-birthday-flying-Union-Jack.html

Do these people think he was forced to step down for no reason? Are we supposed to have forgotten he is closely linked to a scandal where underage girls were procured to be sexually abused and raped? Not just linked, photographed and accused of being a participant. And that he appears to not be following up to help investigations that he rather publicly said he would.

Why on earth we would be honouring a [poster REDACTED appropriate word here] on his birthday?

Or does no one care about the sexual abuse of underage girls that has happened and continues to happen? Angry

Disgraceful! I sincerely hope this isn't going ahead.

HavelockVetinari · 06/02/2020 15:36

He presumably thinks that now the Sussexes have fucked off there's room for him to creep back in! Angry

Marcipex · 06/02/2020 15:39

Disgraceful.

Mockersisrightasusual · 06/02/2020 15:40

Or else what?

My plan to replace the Windsors as Royal Family with the Redknapp-Lampards grows in popularity.

Long Live King Arry, Prince Frank and Princess Christine

Marcipex · 06/02/2020 15:43

Well, a lot of people have rotten eggs ready.

NYnachos · 06/02/2020 15:48

After the embarrassment he's caused to the "establishment", not to mention his (alleged) abuse of under age children, I'm surprised they want to draw attention to him.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/02/2020 16:04

I'm fairly surprised they fly flags for any of their birthdays.

GrumpyGran8 · 06/02/2020 16:16

It looks like No 10 is having a rethink: www.express.co.uk/news/royal/1238746/royal-family-news-prince-andrew-birthday-union-flag-royal-family-news-boris-johnson
Yet another demonstration of the appalling incompetence of the current Westminster lot!

LangClegSupportersClub · 06/02/2020 16:32

That's good GrumpyGran it would be good if this ridiculous tradition was stopped anyway. What a waste of money

What photographs? I thought it was all allegations and these had been dropped.

Aesopfable · 06/02/2020 16:40

He hasn’t ‘stepped down’; he remains the Queen’s son and in the line of succession. More stepped back from the limelight as his ‘stock’ currently has ‘little worth’ in terms of being an ambassador for any cause.

I am quite happy to have the royal family, not really a royalist but I think it is probably better having them than getting rid of them. However, I do think things like flying the flag, ceremonial roles etc should be restricted to the top four or so in line for the throne. That is enough.

LangClegSupportersClub · 06/02/2020 17:29

Apologies Aesopfable if you are looking for precision the term the royal family have used is 'withdraw' rather than 'step down'

In terms of charity patrons I don't know what term would be best for the removal a patron that was regarded as so toxic sponsors were withdrawing unless he was no longer a patron. But I agree stepped down doesn't convey the disgust that necessitated his removal

If I was a council official I think I would lose the flag.

What an absolute waste of time and money to be putting a flag up and down to celebrate the birthday of anyone, with the possible exception of the queen, and even then I'd only allow her one birthday and not two.

As for putting up to celebrate the birthday of Prince candle-sconce, I dispair.

2BthatUnnoticed · 07/02/2020 09:46

Surely this won’t go ahead. I assume it was some auto-email and someone will have to manually change it.

Personally I wish his HRH would be revoked. Which I know is unlikely.

TedsFederationRep · 07/02/2020 09:54

The trouble is if a new instruction is issued, it would look like an admission that there was traction in the allegations.

The whole mess could have been avoided if they had taken the opportunity when the allegations emerged to review and radically trim the list of people eligible to have the flag flown on their birthdays.

The birthday of the reigning monarch only would do the trick, in my book.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 07/02/2020 09:59

I agree with teds ruling monarch from now on

I didnt know they did this...shows how much attention ive been paying

Gingerkittykat · 07/02/2020 18:18

They won't be flying a flag for him after all.

I have no idea why they fly the flags to celebrate birthdays of several royals and the Queens wedding anniversary anyway and glad they have made this decision.
