Wtf football?

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 22:19

Got in from the pub

Settled down to watch the news

We have a football match instead

DH says this isn't the final or anything

Wimbledon etc or snooker they tend to switch to bbc2 or similar

WTF is going on?

I am reminded of my childhood when weekend TV was horse racing, grand Prix, football etc wall to wall ( well 3 then 4 channels!) presumably on the basis that men worked all week and deserved to relax at weekend.

News article is gone for a football match? Like I say even Wimbledon switches channels...

I am confused and feel like in 1979 again but even worse.

??? Any thoughts.

Meh, pick your battles. Broadcast TV is rubbish, look elsewhere. Netflix, Amazon Prime. Even Now TV films and entertainment probably costs less than a "license" to watch the BBC.

Male dominated activities take priority. Don’t get me started on pub quizzes where the sport round is all about football...

Last time I checked football or football quizzes weren’t just for men. Hmm

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 22:34

I was saying to DH it was always odd that sport was news...

But this feels really jarring! Yes have had a few but news shifted? Even Wimbledon they say ok we're going to bbc2 now cos news.

This took me right back to 1979!

I don't understand why... Anyone got ideas? I say male supremacy is back with brexit. DH rolled eyes and said well they've paid a lot of money for it...

Genuinely feel WTAF...

I mean it's not like England in cup final or something.

Is this what we need to get used to?

Hopefully they will roll back the formula one rules so it goes on for 70 million years as well... Big memory from childhood 😁

Nah, other than in big international tournaments (every 2 years), there is barely any live football on terrestrial tv, that’s why this hardly ever happens. The match was due to end in time for the news but needed extra time.

Loads of women like football by the way.

mynameiscalypso · 04/02/2020 22:38

Why is this in feminism? I'm watching the football (and I'm a woman! Shock!) because I like watching live football and it's an exciting game.

BoswellsBollocks · 04/02/2020 22:39

It’s an FA cup match that has gone in to extra time. They can’t just switch the channel it’s on or stop showing it mid game.

Wasn’t the news on BBCnews24 for you?

SproutMuncher · 04/02/2020 22:39

You don’t need to get used to it because bbc will never be able to afford rights to screen premier league or champions league matches, so it will only be the occasional FA cup replay that goes to extra time that will cause this.

ddraigygoch · 04/02/2020 22:42

It's the FA Cup replays.

And your point being?

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 22:57

'They can’t just switch the channel it’s on or stop showing it mid game.'

They do it with Wimbledon and the snooker as standard!

Like I say I've been in the pub and I don't need to pick battles etc and also not saying no women like football (and if we're getting into stereotypes in broadcasting, not sure news is seen as a female centric thing tbh, another conversation!).

Anyway.

Tonight took me back to the 70s big time. No switching channels. Not England in world cup final...

Not sure how to articulate this. It felt like something from decades ago, not normal for recent times.

It was an odd decision, IMO.

OP posts:
ddraigygoch · 04/02/2020 23:06

It was the replays. The BBC and BT Sport have FA cup rights. The have spent millions.

Because people want this.

Unlike the 70s there are more than three channels And there's also catch up.

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 23:12

There are more than 3 channels so plenty of places to shift it to. Multiple even and in super HD!

And more important than having the news on bbc1 at its fixed time?

Yeah not at all convinced.

To me, it was very jarring. And odd. Can't remember that happening recently.

Anyway watched the news seen about 10000 kids in essentially war camps in Syria.

And now it's football again 😃

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 23:16

Have, at I said, had a few. AOK with football on in the pub etc...

I'm not going to write letters or anything was just a bit... Well this is different!

You can't watch the news on catch up BBC by the way it always goes to news 24 which is not the same...

Anyway...

Having more beer then news night on catch up! Or, horse racing... Who knows...

OP posts:
ddraigygoch · 04/02/2020 23:17

That's not how it works! They spent money on this. So it get prime placement. Who do you think they're going to pander to? The majority!

It was more important than the news. Because it was live. It was happening.

People can get the news on their phones 24/7.

The only thing wrong with tonight was the idiots who decided not to show the Liverpool game.

bottlenose301 · 04/02/2020 23:20

It went to extra time so naturally had to keep it until the end. Other channels already had programmes ongoing.

I have seen many a time on tv live events (not just sporting) which has gone over schedule time and delayed the following programme. It's quite frequent.

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 23:24

More important than 10000 kids left in a desperate situation?

I'm assuming you didn't read that rather than meaning it like that!

I grew up, I suppose, with news at 9, then news at 10, being a thing. Used to be big Ben bongs etc. Lots of things are happening 'now'. Including things on the news.

The fact that it got pushed for a football game (that could have switched to bbc2 etc as tennis/ snooker does) seems unusual to me. And it is unusual. I can't remember the last time the main evening news got pushed.

OP posts:
ddraigygoch · 04/02/2020 23:28

Honestly. At that one moment people watching the football are going to be more interested in that than an event on the other side of the world that can't be changed.

It couldn't be changed.

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 23:36

Interesting.

A fourth round replay supercedes , what, everything, more or less?

I wasn't watching the football I put the news on and, nope.

With snooker and Wimbledon (things I do watch) they give warning of channel change and run it on both for a bit so people can switch.

Anyway. My point was more, it felt like the 70s again. Sport over riding everything. I suppose for some people it does. But different sports, different teams, etc.

That the news got pulled across multiple channels felt weird to me. Different.

OP posts:
KimikosDreamHouse · 04/02/2020 23:44

You could have watched News at Ten on ITV.

KimikosDreamHouse · 04/02/2020 23:45

And why on earth is this in FWR?

Doyoumind · 04/02/2020 23:52

This does not belong on here.

bettybeans · 04/02/2020 23:52

Showing extra time in a live football match is not “male supremacy” ffs, it’s smart broadcasting. There’s news on umpteen other channels. People who have been sitting watching a live game are not going to be impressed by a channel switch, especially in the dying minutes of a cup game. It’s not like snooker or darts.

Aside from anything else, Oxford fans won’t often get to see their side on mainstream channels and it was a massive game for them. By all accounts it sounds like an exciting one too. Oxford kept themselves in it with an equaliser right at the death.

Can’t get on board with this grump at all, sorry. Football isn’t just for men. 👍
