Wtf football?

FrogsFrogs · 04/02/2020 22:19

Got in from the pub

Settled down to watch the news

We have a football match instead

DH says this isn't the final or anything

Wimbledon etc or snooker they tend to switch to bbc2 or similar

WTF is going on?

I am reminded of my childhood when weekend TV was horse racing, grand Prix, football etc wall to wall ( well 3 then 4 channels!) presumably on the basis that men worked all week and deserved to relax at weekend.

News article is gone for a football match? Like I say even Wimbledon switches channels...

I am confused and feel like in 1979 again but even worse.

??? Any thoughts.

Because I felt transported back to being a kid in the 70s when it was wall to wall sport at the weekend, for reasons I don't need to go into I'm sure!

I find it interesting that this match was more important than eg Wimbledon final or snooker (I like snooker) and even when we hosted the Olympics I don't remember the news being pushed, they moved either the sport or the news to bbc2...

Like I say, felt old school.

I look forward to the return of this sort of thing Grin

Why is it on fwr?

Serious?

Ok. Can elucidate tomorrow when less hammered. Whole wealth of commentary available around this topic if you can't wait!

FrogsFrogs · 05/02/2020 00:05

On Google I mean. Sorry, bit pissed.

Ok. The being hammered explains your posts but it will never explain why this belongs on here.

bettybeans · 05/02/2020 00:16

Gotta be honest I don’t remember a Wimbledon final being switched either but I could be wrong there. Might all look different in the morning when you’ve sobered up though 😉

ddraigygoch · 05/02/2020 07:53

It doesn't belong here. This is not a feminist issue. But I can not wait for OP to sober up and 'elucidate' us all this morning.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 05/02/2020 07:59

weary

You even said ‘male dominated’ can’t get much clearer than that

mynameiscalypso · 05/02/2020 08:28

I'm interested to know the OPs take on the times that the news has run late because of Eurovision overrunning.

EverardDigby · 05/02/2020 08:41

I hate football now, I used to love it but then I wasn't allowed to play as I was a girl, and it dominated my teens with my DF and DB playing and watching both weekend days and during the week. I hated the shouting at the telly and the constant discussion kick by kick of my DB's match over Sunday lunch (my DF ran the club). I don't want to listen to sport on the news, Alexa defaults to giving the sports news too so I have to tell it to stop, and I was thinking the other day that there's nothing that's enjoyed more by women than men that has similar coverage.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/02/2020 08:43

The reason there was wall to wall sport on TV in the 70s is because there was only three channels, so sport had to be on either ITV or BBC usually.
Now most of it is on Sky, BBC and ITV have very little, so it's very easy to avoid if you don't like it.
I don't think one game, or even a few, heralds a return to the 70s, because Sky still owns the rights for most sports.
You can relax, OP, it isn't going to be a common event.

ElloBrian · 05/02/2020 08:50

Liverpool started late because of local transport problems.

Yes Wimbledon gets shifted most of the time and bbc get major grief for it. But if it was a major British player then it doesn't always move channels either, especially if it's at a critical part of the match.

But the reason you don't see it often for football is because football is dominated by money - bbc don't get the rights for many matches and the ones they do they won't shift in the event of extra time.

In the world where there are numerous 24 hour news channels (including bbc) there is no reason to move a live sporting fixture to accommodate the news.

JacquesHammer · 05/02/2020 08:52

Not sure how to articulate this. It felt like something from decades ago, not normal for recent times

It’s absolutely normal! Match goes to extra time, “news follows the end of the match”.

PiggyPlumPie · 05/02/2020 08:58

I think tennis and snooker are scheduled channel swaps - we know it's going to happen and they are run concurrently and with plenty of warning.

The sports are totally different - there are pauses in play when the announcements are made. It would be a bit rubbish to announce a channel change and then switch when Oxford were taking a corner for example.

I'm neither a Newcastle or Oxford fan but was completely hooked by the match last night.

FrogsFrogs · 05/02/2020 10:32

Sobered up now! And feel exactly the same.

OP posts:
littlbrowndog · 05/02/2020 10:35

Was a good match. Gutted for Oxford.

Glad it was on bbc

ddraigygoch · 05/02/2020 10:36

But you've not actually explained what the problem is.

You don't like football. Fine. Pick another channel. Like news 24.

Millions more people do like football. And as they outnumber you their demands were met.

ddraigygoch · 05/02/2020 10:38

@littlbrowndog I was really gutted for Oxford. They really fought back at the end and they came close in ET.

But the biggest tragedy was that the Liverpool game wasn't shown and the own goal by Shrewsbury. And I say that as a Liverpool fan.
I really hope the poor guy isn't getting to much grief.

littlbrowndog · 05/02/2020 10:46

The tension. Imagine it had gone to penalties 😂

deydododatdodontdeydo · 05/02/2020 11:44

I can't stand football, and I hate it if a programme I want to watch is delayed by it, but I wouldn't post about it on a feminism board because that would be bonkers.

ACatWhoBinds · 05/02/2020 16:42

I agree with everyone saying this has no place on the feminism board. This is not a feminist issue. If anything, it's a tv schedule issue but even that's debatable.
Extra time can't be preempted, it doesn't happen in every game and it's not hours long - there'd be no point moving it to another channel for 15 minutes, especially when that channel already has programming scheduled. And that's not taking into account the people who would be annoyed with it - not just football fans but people who would be watching BBC 2. You are in the minority on this one.
And that's not taking into account the fact that, like many others have already explained, terrestrial TV doesn't have many matches anymore so the ones they do have they want to be pride of place. If you don't pay for nowTV, Sky or BT sports, you don't get much football.
Also, women can like football and now there's proper leagues for women's football too (note: go and see your local team and support them! It's a lot of fun!)
One game of football is not 'going back to the seventies'

VickyEadieofThigh · 05/02/2020 17:54

NOT a feminism issue.

Many women enjoy football. As others have pointed out, it's about programming and audiences.

Pick your battles, get exercised about issues that are detrimental to women - because ranting about this just makes us look daft.

Mockersisrightasusual · 05/02/2020 18:00

What we need is a channel with just BBC News that's on 24/7

RaininSummer · 05/02/2020 18:03

I agree OP. Was quite flummoxed at 10 pm last night when i thought i would do news then bed.
