It looks routine, but still a good thing

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 31/01/2020 21:26

Thanks, will watch with interest.

Hopefully it will be genuinely independent and will hear evidence from women and detransitioners, not just Mermaids & stonewall.

Michelleoftheresistance · 31/01/2020 21:27

Quite. Will it be independent or will it identify as independent?

AnyOldSpartabix · 31/01/2020 21:28

From Wikipedia, Hilary Cass left Great Ormond Street hospital after raising concerns over patient safety.

Sounds like she might be properly independent. My first thought was suspicion, which I hope turns out to be wholly misplaced.

NotBadConsidering · 31/01/2020 21:47

I think this is great news.

Cheesespreading · 31/01/2020 21:48

Hopefully some good comes of it and they stop putting children on it when they don’t know what they are getting themselves into.

PermanentTemporary · 31/01/2020 21:51

I think this is good news too. I'm posting to say that I commut to supporting this process and if it says that chemotherapy to distort normal development in distressed adolescents is in fact truly evidence based, I will shut up about this issue. And that's quite a commitment from my current position.

Languishingfemale · 31/01/2020 22:12

Let's hope that this is really independent and not packed to the rafters with those groups and individuals currently removing safeguarding and grooming children into believing that they've got the wrong body.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 31/01/2020 22:14

I started replying with a smilie emoji permanentemporary. But I've just remembered that NICE have a history of recommending local decision making, plus specialist referral (in this situation I guess only to the Tavi) where there is a lack of conclusive evidence.

Bugger.

PermanentTemporary · 31/01/2020 22:19

[shrug] Theres not much to be done. If an independent review of the process com eludes that there really is a case for this extraordinary 'treatment' to go ahead- well, I must concur. I'm not an endocrinologist and I believe in medical science as a general rule.

ChattyLion · 31/01/2020 22:20

Anything that allows more objective, evidence-based questions to be asked in public has to be a good thing, surely?

AutumnRose1 · 31/01/2020 22:21

Michelle 😂😂

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 31/01/2020 22:32

Are we talking "independent" like when the Catholic church or the BBC run investigations into their own behaviour, or really independent, in which case the results will be supressed?

rogdmum · 31/01/2020 22:37

Dr Cass is in Twitter. I’ve just tweeted to ask if she will have any detransitioners or parents on her working group.

OP posts:
rogdmum · 31/01/2020 22:38

*on Twitter. She’s not actually inside twitter

OP posts:
SarahTancredi · 31/01/2020 22:43

Fingers crossed this is done properly

rogdmum · 31/01/2020 22:44

And the answer to that would be a no Hmmm, am starting to go off it as who will the members of the public be then?

OP posts:
averylongtimeasLangCleg · 31/01/2020 22:49

It says they will be consulting "experts " . I wonder which "experts"

BadgertheBodger · 31/01/2020 22:50

Good. At least there’s a chance sanity will prevail. I’m also beyond glad that there are properly organised groups like LGB alliance and the detransitioners network - there cannot be any assumption made by the review that the prescribing of these drugs to block puberty is entirely unopposed.

BadgertheBodger · 31/01/2020 22:51

Urgh rodgmum really? Did she have any reason for this glaring omission?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 31/01/2020 23:06

'Patients, families, experts and interested parties will be invited to comment on a draft specification.'

How will they choose these people, or do they mean it'll be open to anyone who identifies/qualifies as such?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 31/01/2020 23:08
  • but overall, possibly good news.
Doyoumind · 31/01/2020 23:14

I was coming here to post about this. Let's hope it really is a positive step.

Goosefoot · 01/02/2020 02:06

Having detransitioners could be seen as similar to having trans individuals. If they are simply looking at the medical effects neither would be appropriate, I'd think?
