Maya template letter for MP

Have posted this on the trello board too, but posting here in case it's useful to anyone (have copied much of the text from Maya's website but I checked with her first)

Dear ……...

I am writing to you as my MP as I am extremely concerned by a recent ruling made in an employment tribunal. The consequences of this ruling, are, I believe, far reaching and set a dangerous precedent for women and free speech.

Maya Forstater, a London based researcher lost her job for expressing her beliefs on sex and gender on her personal twitter account. These beliefs are namely that sex is a biological fact, and is immutable. There are two sexes, male and female. Men and boys are male. Women and girls are female. It is impossible to change sex. These are beliefs that I share, and yet the judgement ruled that these beliefs are ‘not worthy of respect in a democratic society’ and are a legitimate reason for employment to be terminated.

Women face discrimination on the basis of sex. The rights of women to organise, to play a role in public life and to be protected against discrimination have been hard-won in recent generations. Protections against sex discrimination depend on being able to recognise sex. This is why it is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act.
This judgment removes women’s rights and the right to freedom of belief and speech. It gives judicial licence for women and men who speak up for objective truth and clear debate to be subject to aggression, bullying, no platforming and economic punishment.

As my MP I urge you to understand the implications of this case for the country and your constituents. Women’s rights are under threat and we need your help to protect them.

Sincerely,

Just a heads-up that template letters are not nearly as effective as putting something in your own words.

MrsSnippyPants · 23/01/2020 10:41

Agreed Sicario but they can give people a good starting point so the more examples knocking about the better and this is a good one.

OhHolyJesus · 23/01/2020 10:43

This is fab OP, will 'customise' and send.

I'll also do a thread for similar about the census when I've completed it.

Yes but it's a good base for people to start from
