I'm reading "Difficult women a history of feminism in 11 fights" by Helen Lewis

Sexnotgender · 08/01/2021 20:35

I am. But slowly, because it’s upsetting.

DH bought a copy for PIL for Christmas! Grin

I bought it the day it was published - had been waiting eagerly for months. Have it on audible too. I need to reread it though. First reading is so rage inducing that you have to take it in chunks and you miss bits through the anger.

I'm fascinated by how different people pick up on different aspects. FIL is finding it hard going but interesting. But he's completely missed the driving/walking to work thing - which I think is in the prologue?! DH is completely obsessed by the music sections - female composers, female pianists etc and basically any parts that are to do with size - building work, safety equipment etc. The bits that had the most impact on me were around issues in developing countries/disaster areas (eg houses without kitchens or the "incorrectly used" ovens) and also the way children (girls) are treated. We all have our issues/interests.

Someone mentioned the Vagina Bible. I really need to read that before her next book, on menopause, comes out.

reallyisthisallthereis · 09/01/2021 01:44

I've read it, it's a fabulous book. I left it in my classroom on my bookshelf and somebody has 'borrowed' it. I'm quite annoyed but also hopeful that somebody else is reading it and being inspired by it.

Galvantula · 09/01/2021 10:44

I'm reading "Misogynies" by Joan Smith. Mostly with a kind of horrified look on my face.

I am awful for reading lots of books at once, so I have started Invisible Women too and have Helen Lewis's book mentioned above lined up on my kindle.

Also in the middle of reading the Strike series. 🙈

peanut2017 · 10/01/2021 10:05

I'm reading this but like others have said in small bits as I get so annoyed and really need to let the information be absorbed.

However she does use the word gender an awful lot which did confuse me at the beginning? Anyone else?

Also reading the Vagina Bible which is very interesting but she has a whole chapter on transgender and that they are just like us which was so disappointing especially from a medical doctor

Newwayofthinking · 10/01/2021 17:25

Took me ages to read as I needed to process the information and calm down each time.

I'm now reading Irreversible Damage

PotholeParadies · 01/03/2021 22:51

Currently £1.99 on Kindle

Obviously proving it has been read and passing tests on comprehension should be a condition of taking or keeping any senior job paid from the public purse. (Starting with M.Ps) Then work down the pay grades. This is semi flippant, but truly, that level of ignorance is not acceptable. It is as though we have our country run entirely by and for Japanese speakers, on the assumption that everyone speaks, and is, Japanese.

Meanwhile, all teachers/lecturers and all students should have any qualification held conditionally pending confirmation, till they too have passed the test, with a final examination of "who is a real, full, human being, exactly equal to you?" The trick questions would be that those identifying as Bame would accept white English are the same as themselves, and everyone should accept that extremely old and extremely impaired of all ages are also equal. (The 'equality' parts of the online school lessons appear to assume a) racism can only ever be white against black and b) there is no such thing as ageism, while c) all aspects of disablism are dealt with by showing an extremely high functioning Downs syndrome actor)

JKRismyhero · 03/03/2021 17:07

I read that, and difficult women consecutively. I enjoyed them both.

CousinKrispy · 03/03/2021 17:23

Ooh I've just finished Irreversible Damage, very interesting and compassionate.

Miaowse · 03/03/2021 19:43

Could this have been the Radio programme @Scout2016? I haven’t listened to it yet.

Great book. Every time I fasten my seat belt I think about it.

I noticed Irreversible Damage is back in stock on Amazon after being unavailable in physical form for months. Another must read.
