Kathleen Stock cancelled by UEA

In another example of the ongoing existential threat to freedom of speech, Kathleen Stock's speech at the University of East Anglia has been 'postponed'

^I think this is part of a wider pattern where an invitation to speak is given in the normal way, and then senior management panic in response apparently to some kind of protest,” she said.
“They know that can’t say they are cancelling the talk, so they say we are ‘postponing’ it in the interests of something nebulous like health and safety" The university said the talk could go ahead if a “transgender speaker” is also invited the following week. They said a bigger venue was needed as well as additional security^

Jeez bob

What can I say about bob which bob hasn’t said about bob already

There you go bob. Come back at me bob

Aesopfable · 20/01/2020 00:35

Bob believes in bigotry

Bobalicious1 · 20/01/2020 15:21

@littlbrowndog - sorry, huh???

@Aesopfable - I love big trees... They are great for the environment

Well done for having opinions :-)

sunshinesupermum · 20/01/2020 15:27

Bloody ridiculous - whatever happened to freedom of speech.

RuffleCrow · 20/01/2020 17:35

Anyone who says they believe in tolerance, whilst silencing women for stating simple facts, is only fooling themselves. Pull the other one, Bob, it's got bells on. Grin

NellieEllie · 20/01/2020 18:08

It is appalling. Cancelling is almost certainly due to security concerns. That is, the threats from TRAs. That being the case, there should be a whole load of publicity about this. Cancelling a speaker because of protests from people who most of the voting public consider to be extremists, is a serious infringement of free speech.

Bobalicious1 · 21/01/2020 05:39

@RuffleCrow

Hate is hate - regardless of it coming from a male or female

Again, well done to UEA for standing up to hate :-)

Dinga-a-ling!!! Yep, this bell works :-D

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many of you lot that have fired back at me are LGBTQ+, or, have actual close friends that have suffered hate towards them due to their sexuality?

GirlDownUnder · 21/01/2020 05:54

Are you actually asking for people to provide their credentials before you’ll ‘allow’ their comment to have merit? 😂 😂 🤦‍♂️

You’ve more neck than a giraffe, bob with bells.

AnyOldPrion · 21/01/2020 06:12

Almost everyone here will have suffered hate because of her sex.

But that doesn’t count if you’re a misogynist because selective blindness often goes hand in hand with woman-hatred.

One day, UEA and other universities will stop silencing women. I hope it’s sooner rather than later.

Bobalicious1 · 21/01/2020 06:31

@GirlDownUnder - I'm more than happy for anyone to comment, even you :-)

I like giraffes :-)

@anyoldprion - I said sexuality, but, feel free to twist it around :-)

BovaryX · 21/01/2020 06:32

Again, well done to UEA for standing up to hate

Bob's contribution to this thread epitomises the existential threat to freedom of speech in UK universities and beyond. Harry Miller's case is another example. The modern totalitarians are on the march, shrieking about hate whilst radiating bigotry. One of the reasons they chant #no debate is because they can't debate. These authoritarian ideologues, who cry victimhood whilst hounding and demonising people? Time for some serious pushback.

This.

Aesopfable · 21/01/2020 07:30

Bob you seem to have put a typo opinion that passage, you obviously meant

“Again, well done to UEA for standing up for hate”

You obviously think hatred, intolerance and bigotry are principles that universities should follow as shown by your posts here. Who else do you think should be excluded from campus/society because you don’t agree with them? Muslims? Jews? Conservatives?

AnyOldPrion · 21/01/2020 08:00

”I said sexuality, but, feel free to twist it around”

Well yes you did Bob. But this is a feminism forum, where we are discussing the cancellation of a feminist speaker. So demanding that we supply you oppression credentials which appear to bear no direct relation to the topic at hand is an odd thing to do.

It seemed almost as if you were deliberately ignoring the oppression women experience on account of their sex.

If you believe returning the discussion to the topic at hand is twisting then I suspect a feminist forum might not be the best place for you.

Aesopfable · 21/01/2020 08:20

Agree, Prion, asking for for evidence of hate towards a group on a thread about a university bowing to hate...

Bobalicious1 · 21/01/2020 08:48

A feminist speaker that preached anti-LGBTQ+ was postponed

ANYBODY else he preaches hate should be cancelled

Nobody is off limits

You're welcome to carry on spewing your hatred on here, but, I'm going to stop notifications, etc, as I've had my say.

I genuinely hope you don't spread this hatred to your children (assuming you're actually mum's)

Have a nice day

BovaryX · 21/01/2020 08:59

ANYBODY else he preaches hate should be cancelled

An academic was cancelled because she refuses to capitulate to the #no debate zealots. This existential threat to freedom of speech and Enlightenment values is becoming more explicit every day. Who gets to define 'hate?' Who gets to police who speaks? Are Conservatives allowed to speak on campus? Why should a vocal minority of authoritarians dictate the parameters of public discourse? Sorry Bob. No sale.

drspouse · 21/01/2020 09:05

I imagine that Dr Stock, as a lesbian, has experienced hate because of her sexuality.
But let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story, eh bob

GirlDownUnder · 21/01/2020 09:07

And @Bobalicious1 once again proving the point for BovaryX

One of the reasons they chant #no debate is because they can't debate.

AnyOldPrion · 21/01/2020 09:59

Good decision.

Tubbytwo · 21/01/2020 10:16

This may be an unanswerable question but how does anyone manage to retain their belief in a fallacy such as the TRAs most famous ‘truth’ when not only do they have no proof, and therefore cannot debate, but their best, indeed only, ‘defence’ is anger and threats of violence/actual violence against those outside their cult? I’m still perplexed by the way that opinion, no matter how demonstrably inaccurate, has become more important than objective fact 🤔

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 21/01/2020 11:14

Why do I keep getting this image in my head when bob speaks?

It’s misogyny in action.

😂 👍

Mayomaynot · 22/01/2020 11:15

Kathleen Stock, thanks for speaking up. Shame on UEA for silencing women.
