Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why do we refer to “self id”?

Inspired by the spousal veto/spouse exit clause thread, and I guess the bedroom tax/spare bedroom subsidy dichotomy.
Why do we use the TRA “self id” language when we are talking about removal of the diagnosis requirement from the GRC process?
because “self I’d” sounds, well, like good words. Can we think of another expression? Unilateral recognition? One-party compulsion? Autodiagnosis? I dunno, my words are too long... any one?

I quite like self-id, it means exactly what it says.

So when your MP says he supports self-id and also talks about "after transition", you can point out that with self-id, "transition" requires no changes.

Maybe it’s ok. But I don’t think the gender critical side are campaigning about the self belief of trans people. I thunk they are campaigning against action being forced as a result. For instance if a self id transwoman is entitled to a GRC and then if convicted of a custodial crime, must be in a woman’s prison

I’ve just realised that my phone doesn’t like transwoman. It insists on trans woman.

It's the recognition of self ID which is the problem. If I self ID as a squirrel and everyone ignores it, there's no issue. If everyone is forced to treat me as a squirrel then we've all got problems. Accepted self ID? Recognised self ID? self assessed ID?

Self-cert?

Self diagnosis? Self promotion?!

AnyOldPrion · 13/01/2020 20:34

I sometimes add the explanation “legal sex change with no gatekeeping” if I use the term “self-ID” as I don’t think it’s clear what that means if you’re not au fait with these issues.

Bit like transwoman and transman being the wrong way round in most people’s heads when they first begin to read or hear about it.

There’s been lots of discussion about the constantly changing and (possibly deliberately) confusing language and I agree, OP, self-ID isn’t a clear description to anyone who doesn’t know.

I’ve just realised that my phone doesn’t like transwoman. It insists on trans woman.

Mine refuses to learn the word transwomen no matter how many times I type it. I always go back and correct it and it learns every other word I type regularly! I wonder if I'm being flagged on some kind of TERF database within the bowels of Big Tech for persistently refusing to type the space.

HandsOffMyRights · 13/01/2020 20:56

Self-ID is a good choice.
Claims, pretends, believes, imagines, delusional could all be used if I identified as James Dean.

But enforcing this make belief system on others (especially when you are top of the patriachy tree) expecting them to be complicit in my deceit and placing others who do not have such sex based entitlement at risk of harm, further oppression, prosecution, loss of livelihood and reputation etc. goes beyond the realms of just self ID and into dictatorship/totalitarianism.

I like self-diagnosis. If I were a hypochondriac and Googled my symptoms (even if they were imaginary), I could self diagnose. As a perimenopausal woman, I'm sure there's lots I could imagine,

When my phone was new to this topic, it would autocorrect 'self ID' to 'selfish'.

RicketyClickety · 14/01/2020 05:58

It's "personality-based sex ID" really.

Angryresister · 14/01/2020 07:42

lying delusional deceptive could replace it..

SnuggyBuggy · 14/01/2020 07:47

I don't think you can self ID. You can't make other people see something they dont. For good or bad how other people see you does shape your identity

testing987654321 · 14/01/2020 07:59

I agree that it makes no sense for a person to "self-id" their sex. I just think it's very clear language that this is what transgender activists want.

It's much clearer than wanting their true gender recognised. You have to argue about all sorts of definitions with that one.
