This hashtag has gone viral on Twitter. Can someone please explain what it means, and who it benefits? Thx

Means they can't spell.

PenguindreamsofDraco · 11/01/2020 06:54

And probably have blue hair. HTH.

DryHeave · 11/01/2020 07:05

It’s easy to tell the sex of 95% of people tweeting with the hashtag.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 11/01/2020 07:13

It shows that people feel they need to redefine their gender to get away from what they see society expects. Wouldn't it be great if people didn't feel the need to go along with gender stereotypes (as many feminists have been fighting for a long time).

Deliriumoftheendless · 11/01/2020 07:30

I am unique - just like everybody else.

nauticant · 11/01/2020 07:51

No. I'm more unique than you.

nauticant · 11/01/2020 08:16

There's a very great deal of anime shit under the #IAmNonbinary hashtag.

Sorry for any anime fans but it gives me an instinctive red flag reaction because for me it's strongly associated with misogyny.

feelingverylazytoday · 11/01/2020 08:28

It's just attention seeking crap. No need to pander to it.

Soontobe60 · 11/01/2020 08:34

What's 'anime'?

nauticant · 11/01/2020 08:41

This is anime.

Anime images are often used by trans people and people with fetishes as being symbolic of themselves and their "struggle". Much of it is creepy sexualised very young girls. People seeing themselves as anime characters is symptomatic of a desire to hide in a fantasy life rather than face reality.

TiredofthisBS · 11/01/2020 08:46

Everyone pay attention to meeeeeeee because I'm super special.

Doyoumind · 11/01/2020 09:01

It was the top trend at one point yesterday because it was #iamnonbinary day apparently.

I had a good look through loads of pictures and there were the usual themes - lots of anime, mostly of cutesy girls and animals, people who are trying to escape from being labelled misfits, attention seekers who think they are edgy in the way they dress, people who present totally according to gender norms but claim not to accept the gender binary without realising that's pretty much the same as being GC.

So many of them are very young. I can't help but think they will look back with some embarrassment.

Soontobe60 · 11/01/2020 09:06

Thanks @nauticant

Seems a little bit sad to me?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 11/01/2020 09:11

I wouldn't know if it was more females than males or vice versa joining in.
So many young girls are buying into the kool aid situation that I wouldn't like to guess.

I also agree that the nonsense of fighting against the binary but then also buying completely into the stereotype of what a "feminine woman" and a "masculine man" look like is ridiculous.

Being non binary means you wear what you want, when you want - do what you want, when you want (in terms of hobbies, work, activities etc.) without being BOUND by gender stereotypes. But if you believe that you should be bound by the opposite gender stereotype then you're not non-binary. You're just confused.

DeeZastris · 11/01/2020 09:14

Attention seeking.

Fairenuff · 11/01/2020 09:30

Being non binary means that you think there are only two sexes.
