Utterly horrific story. This, along with the woman raped in Cyprus, makes me despair about whether we will ever achieve women's liberation.

Heartbreaking

SarahTancredi · 31/12/2019 10:18

Oh God that's horrific. Poor girl. And I don't envy the person who has to tell that baby where they came from in a few years time.

Poor little girl. Cant believe he only got 4 years.

Sweet dreams child...Sad

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/12/2019 10:22

@SarahTancredi where does it say he got 4 years? I don’t see it mention sentencing

Fucking horrific, and yet probably pretty common around the world

Qcng · 31/12/2019 10:28

4 years?
One for each year he was raping her then?

SarahTancredi · 31/12/2019 10:30

Sorry I think it was in the comments. These articles always seem to jump.around when you view them on the phone.

My bad..apologies. whatever he got/gets it wont be long enough.

On.a.side note I cant help but wonder about the state of the maternity care there...

MoltenLasagne · 31/12/2019 10:56

That poor girl.

RoyalCorgi · 31/12/2019 10:59

Sarah - yes, I wondered about the maternity care too. In the UK, maternal mortality rates are very low - though obviously we don't, fortunately, have very many 13-year olds having babies. I looked up maternal mortality rates in Brazil, and apparently it's 60 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is very high - and six times higher than the UK rate.

She hadn't received any antenatal care though, so she could have had serious complications.
Rest in peace Angel. You deserved better.

stillathing · 31/12/2019 11:06

I have a Brazilian friend who told me maternity care is completely different there. It's so unusual to have a vaginal delivery that it becomes local gossip. "Normal" means scheduling a C section - but timed very much at the surgeon's convenience rather than what is in the interests of the mother or baby.

BibblyBobbly · 31/12/2019 11:07

This makes me feel physically sick. That poor poor young girl.

His sentence should include not only his sexual offences but her death caused as a result of that abuse.

SarahTancredi · 31/12/2019 11:10

But the drs decided to.induce her. Wouldnt that involve some degree of bloodwork or ultrasound and monitoring?

They picked up anaemia but nothing flagged up with anything else?

The pre term baby is doing well they have the facilities to take care of preemies but not the mums?

She definately did deserve better..everyone charged with caring for this poor girl let her down in the most horrific ways.

mumwon · 31/12/2019 11:11

in some (most? all?)S American countries abortion is illegal or difficult to get & the Catholic Church has major influence. I did a little research for a essay a few years ago & one case I remember was that of a child even younger than this where the mother got the child to the doctor & he performed the abortion because he believed that the child was too young/small to go through a pregnancy & it would kill her & the baby too. The Catholic Church excommunicated them both. There are homes for these very young mothers & they are forced by both the morality & law to keep the pregnancy & give birth even when it threatens their lives & health - it is sickening that the child is twice punished - first by being raped & than by being forced to give birth

IpanemaGallina · 31/12/2019 11:11

Desperately sad but not uncommon in Brazil unfortunately. I haven’t read the article but if she was living in a favela then there was much less chance of good medical care.

Four years in a Brazilian jail will be so much worse than four years in a uk one, although that’s little consolation.

isabellerossignol · 31/12/2019 11:22

This makes me so sad. I have some very religious relatives who don't believe in abortion in any circumstances whatsoever, even ones like this and I just can't get my head around it. They actually believe that the death of a 13 year old is 'sad' but ultimately not as bad as aborting an embryo, even if that happened only the day after conception. I just can't fathom it. I have a 13 year old and the thought that they'd theoretically sacrifice her life horrifies me.

MIdgebabe · 31/12/2019 11:29

When they willingly trade one life for one potential life they are making a choice. Which implies that they value the potential child greater than the living girl.

BecauseReasons · 31/12/2019 11:29

Her mother didn't believe her Sad

I hope they don't get custody of the baby.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 31/12/2019 11:46

Poor child. Heartbreaking.

powershowerforanhour · 31/12/2019 11:51

Poor girl...she was such a slight wee thing in the photos too. Raped by her father, afraid to tell anyone and then disbelieved by her mother. What a betrayal. Then being so ill - anaemic, wrecked liver, she must have felt physically dreadful too.
Such physical and mental suffering because of that bastard's choice to abuse her. Surely there is some sort of case for manslaughter too?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 31/12/2019 11:52

Poor little girl, disgusting excuse for a father.
