I remember listening to her on Womans Hour, about children's books. She is many layered.

sunsalutations · 25/12/2019 22:43

She's fabulous- I have huge admiration for her.

Thedeadwood · 25/12/2019 22:45

Ooooh I’m a big Dolly fan. What documentary is this?

everythingcrossed · 25/12/2019 22:45

She's an inspiration. Her music is so enduring and her literacy programme is wonderful - plus she's fantastically witty (but rarely bitchy) and well known for supporting other women coming into the industry.

JoeysTurkey · 25/12/2019 22:47

I've always liked her, I (unfortunately) don't know her but she seems very nice, intelligent and caring.

HeartZone · 25/12/2019 22:49

Married for over fifty years! Amazing.

Horriblehhenrietta · 25/12/2019 22:50

You all need to listen to the podcast ‘dolly Parton’s America’. It’s amazing.

littlbrowndog · 25/12/2019 22:51

She’s singing at Glastonbury on bbc now

littlbrowndog · 25/12/2019 22:51

Yeah many layered is what she is

Yubaba · 25/12/2019 22:53

Apparently she never wears the same outfit more than once, She must have an enormous wardrobe. Shock

AgentCooper · 25/12/2019 22:55

I love her. So very, very talented, so wise, so generous and so completely herself.

freedom75 · 25/12/2019 22:56

So impressed with her after watching this documentary x so authentic, I knew she was intelligent & had depth but she really is cool

Never wears the same outfit more than once?
Surely just for stage, though.
I mean, she'll own a pair of jeans for everyday right?

I'm thoroughly against this "never being seen in the same outfit twice" celebrity culture. It's bad for the environment (clothing shouldn't be disposable landfill), anti-feminist (men aren't subject to the same pressure) and encourages rampant capitalism.

Her song "9-to-5" was written by a woman who never worked 9-5 in her life.
She is mostly known for her big boobs and singing style.
She's also had a lot of facial plastic surgery which isn't exactly feminist..

EveryKingdomOfRain · 25/12/2019 23:36

Country music/alt country is actually an extremely collaborative genre, particularly for women

For example Parton is a very old friend of Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt and made 2 albums with them. But generally country musicians collaborate with and support each other in a way which doesn't happen in other genres. Emmylou Harris would probably have never had a career after Gram Parsons died had it not been for the encouragement of Ronstadt.

YouTube is awash with amazing joint performances by Parton/Harris/Ronstadt/Iris DeMent/Lucinda Williams/Bonnie Raitt/KD Lang/Loretta Lynn/Roseanne Cash/Nancy Griffith to name just a few big names.

David Brent on Dolly's philosophy

Verily1 · 25/12/2019 23:40

Dolly’s fab!

Timberoo · 25/12/2019 23:43

Absolutely adore her!

feelingverylazytoday · 25/12/2019 23:44

A brilliant songwriter as well. I heard she wrote Jolene and I will always love you on the same day (don't know if it's true or not).

KizzyWayfarer · 25/12/2019 23:45

What documentary? Is it available on catch up?

FthisS · 25/12/2019 23:47

She is brilliant, my 9yr old daughter absolutely adores Dolly. If anyone hasn't seen Dumplin' on netflix you need to it is such a feel good film.

feelingverylazytoday · 25/12/2019 23:49

No offence, but that statement just makes you sound a bit ignorant. Here's a critique from a professional musician

Timberoo · 25/12/2019 23:49

It's on Catchup BBC2

BettysLeftTentacle · 25/12/2019 23:57

Dolly is seriously kick arse. A proper role model for my young daughters amongst a terrifying sea of shit influencers.

We have a saying in this house: WWDD - what would Dolly Do?

Timberoo · 26/12/2019 00:01

She has a great work ethic. Bizarrely, I never knew she had a husband lol!
