Really disturbing article on recent alleged human rights abuses and events in China. (discussion of rape). This isn't much reported on, that I've seen.

It says page doesn't exist?

AFemale · 23/12/2019 17:26

It said page doesn't exist at the top but Scrolling down I think I found it.

My fault sorry.

It says page doesn't exist?

Link works for me. Would searching provide a different route to it?

Title: 'This is mass rape': China slammed over programme that 'appoints' men to sleep with Uighur women

powershowerforanhour · 23/12/2019 17:30

Jesus. Sounds like ethnic cleansing...cultural genocide, basically.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 23/12/2019 17:33

I'd seen reports of the forced re-education camps that were pretty worrying. This one is even more so.

And yes, power, it looks that way.

I can only find reports in the Daily Mail and the Sun, from UK sources.

I hope these are exaggerated - there are some horrific allegations here (again, content warning for rape and torture/abuse)

Thanks for the links, Scrimshaw. Just bumping this so more people read about this - it is horrible.

Thelnebriati · 24/12/2019 11:21

The Global Slavery Index confirms sex trafficking in China, and ''estimates that on any given day in 2016 there were over 3.8 million people living in conditions of modern slavery in China''.

EvaHarknessRose · 24/12/2019 12:25

I've written to my MP. Keep trying to talk about it and highlight the stories that are reported. But I agree, this is horrific and happening without the world passing much comment Sad

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/12/2019 12:30

It's unimaginable. The scale of it as much as anything - and the fact that nobody seems interested. The US article i read seemed to be going hard on the angle of atheism being immoral. Rather than the appalling abuse being the main issue.

Seems news is only reported when it serves a convenient narrative. How depressing.

Never again, we said, and there was Bosnia. Never again, and Rwanda. Never again, and the US builds concentration camps for CHILDREN on its border. Never again, and the Uighurs and all words are getting to mean nothing.

The future is here. It's just not evenly distributed. I don't know how we survive this.

DonutMan · 26/12/2019 04:06

After the Falun Gong, I'm not surprised by anything that happens in China...

WatchingTheMoon · 26/12/2019 05:18

"Never again, and the US builds concentration camps for CHILDREN on its border"

You cannot compare the US camps to concentration camps. They are not pleasant, something needs to be done about the situation and the way those children are being treated is abhorrent, but it is nothing like Bosnia, Rwanda, North Korea, China or the Holocaust.

xxyzz · 26/12/2019 07:52

Agreed, WatchingTheMoon.

However they are certainly potential precursors to a genocide, and we need to be shedding light on and protesting what Trump is doing in the US to prevent it turning into something even worse.

xxyzz · 26/12/2019 07:54

Thanks, OP - this is horrific.

This article was the first I'd seen that gave a reason for the sudden crackdown on Uighurs.

It is shocking that the rest of the world is prepared to turn a blind eye to this because of trade.

wacademia · 26/12/2019 21:51

"The Government is offering money, housing and jobs to Han people to come and marry Uighur people."

"The Government is offering money, housing and jobs to Han men to come and marry Uighur women."

Tocopherol · 26/12/2019 21:56

Pretty convenient, all those suddenly single Uighur women to fill the gap left by mass sex selective abortion...

ArranUpsideDown · 27/12/2019 21:05

Tangent on the same theme of exploitation with US veterans retiring to SE countries where their pensions go a long way and makes healthcare affordable for them and they get to act as 'white saviours' to the local women:

The way the piece glowingly portrays white men taking advantage of SE Asian countries' poverty to migrate and have sex with local women as "reconciliation" for US war violence in the region makes clear the conquered sexual playground that Westerners yearn to mold all of Asia into
