“No ‘out’ gay men in San Quentin jail, but some transwomen”

I listen to the podcast “Ear Hustle”, about life at San Quentin prison in California.

Interesting episode discussing LGBTQ and the prison, suggested that it was very difficult for men to be out as gay due to homophobia and risks of being ostracised and violence, and that there were no ‘out’ gay men there. But there were a small number of transwomen.

Interviews with a bisexual and trans woman inmates. The latter reported that California policy was that she could transfer to a womens prison only after genitals surgery. Not sure if that was accurate, will look it up.

It’s series 2 and the episode is called “Down Low”.

The podcast is great IMO, lots about how people keep going under adversity.

Also interesting insights into “toxic masculinity” and social issues.

A particularly good episode included a former prisoner from a womens jail, who had been groomed and coerced into prostitution, killed her trafficker, was now working in “restorative justice”. She had a challenging conversation with a maleninmate who’d been involved in this.
