Andrew Doyle interviews Gervais in Spectator. Gervais talks about Harry Miller, ‘hate speech’ and the threat to freedom. Good article

The new puritans aren’t 60-year-old women in twinsets and pearls, the Christian right trying to make us turn off our televisions because they don’t like it. It’s a younger crowd with trendy haircuts, who you’d think would have left-leaning liberal sensibilities, who have invented this new term “hate speech”.’

When the Twitter mobs come, he is never tempted to apologise. ‘Youmustn’t, because that’s the end. The end of satire and the erosion of freedom of speech based on people’s feelings will have a catastrophic effect. It’s not just that comedians will be abit grumpy or won’t be able to say things. It’s not the same as not allowing Bernard Manning to say the N-word on TV. It’s something much, much darker and more Orwellian. It really is

I liked this bit.

Kantastic · 21/12/2019 19:00

pussyhat I liked that bit too! I thought "wow, he REALLY gets it."

But then I got to the bit at the end about "freedom from speech isn't freedom from consequences" and I wasn't so sure. Ricky Gervais is very well placed to weather the "consequences" of everything he says but most people aren't.

But I have to give him credit for nearly getting it, anyway.

HandsOffMyRights · 21/12/2019 19:42

Thanks Ricky and The Spectator. This are truly dark times and satire is needed.

Men are afraid that women will laugh at them, which is why many posts of a humorous nature are zapped.

HandsOffMyRights · 21/12/2019 19:42

These

TiredofthisBS · 21/12/2019 20:10

But Ricky believes TWAW. 🤷🏻‍♀️

When the Twitter mobs come, he is never tempted to apologise. - I think he did when he was using the word "mong" a few years back.

AnotherLass · 21/12/2019 21:07

A three hour gap in between posting "Nope. I said men" and posting the conciliatory reply about how transwomen are women, with a very different tone. And nothing else on the topic since.

Maybe he was busy. But that is also long enough for someone to have a word in his ear about the potential consequences of continuing with this line of talk. The people reliant on the TV networks always back down - Robert Webb etc. They don't have Rowling's power.

Kantastic · 21/12/2019 21:36

That would be extremely disappointing after all his big talk in that Andrew Doyle interview! He basically finished off the interview with a "Bring it on, I can take it!" spiel. TRAs are trying to get him cancelled from the Golden Globes, obviously, but to fold after giving that interview would be... pathetic.

I wonder what he'd say if someone asked him whether Jonathan Yaniv is a woman. And what about Ron McKinnon?

Kantastic · 21/12/2019 21:39

(just realised I am posting in the thread that is actually about that particular interview!)

omikron · 21/12/2019 21:54

I'm confused and potentially disappointed about Ricky

nauticant · 21/12/2019 23:57

Maybe. But it's the weekend, Christmas is near, and I'm going to be optimistic: remember what happened after Martina and JKR had backed down.

Siameasy · 22/12/2019 00:18

I think hes mucking about and being deliberately confusing

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 22/12/2019 00:43

He's being sarcastic.

LatinforTelly · 22/12/2019 00:51

I don't think he is. I've just seen him doubling down on the 'I said men' thing. Men hiding under trans umbrella. Weird. Different tone from his other tweets.

UpfieldHatesWomen · 22/12/2019 01:26

I adore him. Perhaps it's just a journey towards realising how batshit all this stuff is. I think because he's a bloke from humble origins he's very down to earth and isn't afraid to call bullshit as he finds it, he doesn't feel the need to posture so much as his more well-bred contemporaries.

Childrenofthestones · 22/12/2019 01:37

I wonder if the golden globes he comparing
next month willl cancel him.
They'll be under pressure from thevtranslobby as we speak.

ScotiaNova · 22/12/2019 01:46

Yes I’m concerned & confused by his later tweets too. Sarcastic in some definitely, but I don’t think he’s being so in the TWAW with prayer hands one. My take is that he’s drawing a distinction between men using self-ID for predatory reasons and non-predatory men who say they are women, ie TW who are women in his view.

omikron · 22/12/2019 07:16

But this is very clear that he finds it all absurd

ScotiaNova · 22/12/2019 14:13

@omikron he’s having a laugh there but looking at all his tweets again this morning, I absolutely believe he’s drawing a distinction between men who wish to abuse Self-ID and genuine transwomen. These tweets make it quite clear.

Which is fine isn't it?

ScotiaNova · 22/12/2019 14:35

Well yes, he’s entitled to say what he likes.

It’s an important distinction to make and I’m glad he’s making it and starkly showing the problem with self-ID. But I don’t think TWAW, I think they’re trans women and that classifying them as such better protects everyone, including transwomen. Personally I’d like him to say this.

DarwinianMinion · 22/12/2019 14:39

Yeah he’s backing down.

Datun · 22/12/2019 15:13

It's a journey. Almost everyone starts off making a distinction between genuine and not genuine. But you're soon realise that a) it doesn't matter, because you can't tell, and b) you still can't change sex.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 22/12/2019 16:22

Oh, Ricky. That's disappointing.
