JK’s tweet - Media review

What have you seen in the media re JK’s tweet? What do you think? Viewed as pro women’s rights, pro free speech or anti trans?

It’s important as how the media - inc the international media -reports this as it will help set the prism in which the public - who aren’t necessarily clued up on the potential ramifications - view the issues.

E.g - commentary from everyone’s favourite cyclist. ‘Clean’ - doesn’t need to take banned enhancers...

I'm watching bits on YouTube 'News' and was pleased to see France 24 reporting this sensibly, with two females clearly backing JK.

It's out there - TERF is trending and being discussed. The world realises that the Great Oz is just a little man.

JK followed Magdalen - she will have seen Cyclepath's dancing skeleton GIF, so knows that he is as sincere as Wormtail.

SidJS · 20/12/2019 17:16

I heard about the troll dancing but didn’t know to whom it related to.

I watched a couple of Magdalen’s videos and thought they were great. Didn’t realise she died.
Gutted.

RIP

No matter how many setback there are in this struggle, it gave us the moniker Cyclepath. That will forever remain a joy.

HandsOffMyRights · 20/12/2019 17:26

It is gutting that she's not here Sid. Her legacy must live on through our bravery. Whwn JKR followed Magdalen on Twitter it gave me hope. The TRAs went ballistic.

And to post a GIF of a grave dancing skeleton on the day a young woman died is poisonous.
The same character who told women to die in a greasefire.
This is who some media are courting? As soon as you see big Ron's name quoted as a credible source, then you know which way that media outlet swings.

And what an absolute load of bollocks that was, Dr Veronica Ivy (Rachel McKinnon)!

ScapaFlo · 20/12/2019 17:39

Do One Ron Grin

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 20/12/2019 17:39

And if we're talking about respect, Dr Veronica Ivy, kindly STOP referring to me as 'cis' Angry

LiterallyProblematic · 20/12/2019 17:53

Dr Veronica Ivy 🤥

HandsOffMyRights · 20/12/2019 18:01

Or... Ron the Creeper

SophoclesTheFox · 20/12/2019 18:06

Do One Ron

Waaaahhhh! 🤣

SidJS · 20/12/2019 18:12

Dr Ivy - trouble is NBC has a wide audience and the average Jane/Joe will have no idea about the poison in the Ivy...

I note at the bottom it states ‘she is writing a book on trans and intersex women’s athletes rights in sport’

Purposefully conflating trans and intersex

I expect the chapter on the rights of women in sports will be rather minimal...

Aside from Cyclepath - thanks HandsOff and Nauticant, will use in future! - any other views from media???!

Great idea for a thread.

I read the print editions of Telegraph, Times and Daily Mail this morning (I work in media) - funnily enough the DM was the most woke of the lot although still broadly balanced. Times very balanced but even if you write the story as balanced the TRAs come off as nut jobs. Telegraph balanced/slightly right.

The New York Times also managed to avoid literally calling her transphobic and tried to be balanced but was obviously heavily leaning towards woke. The weirdest thing was they accidentally misgendered her - called her "Mr" Rowling Confused

HandsOffMyRights · 20/12/2019 19:00

Pink News as hilarious as ever:

'Star Wars’ Mark Hamill offers swift and sincere apology for liking JK Rowling’s ‘transphobic’ tweet'

In which they forgive Mark, a man, who stars in films that TRAs idolise, for his Twitter crimes.

He gives a 'Swift and Sincere apology' - note the scolding language, in a 'do you renounce the sins of your father' way. (Shit Vader is his father, he was a naughty but misunderstood man).

Thankfully, box office takings will remain high and those teenage TRAs can continue playing with their light sabres.

Did they forgive Alison Moyet, or let Rose McGowan off without a grovelling hostage style video?

What's the difference?
A penis.

DreadPirateLuna · 20/12/2019 19:17

The Vox article may be bad for the blood pressure. Completely misrepresents Maya's case and calls out Rowling as a nasty mean transphobe:
www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/19/21029852/jk-rowling-terf-transphobia-history-timeline

Although the OTT language ("JKR ruins Harry Potter", "a shocking dismissal of transgender identity") might well peak-trans some.

Bimbleberries · 20/12/2019 19:23

Disappointed to see the i newspaper headline on Facebook:
"The Harry Potter creator tweeted in support of a woman with anti-trans views."
And the article from the POV of a trans person:
"As a trans Harry Potter fan I feel betrayed by JK Rowling's tweets"

This was in the 'opinion' section, so it may also have been reported elsewhere, but this was the article that was being shown on social media etc.

Didn't realise cyclepsth had changed their name! Not surprised though!
