So first there was this tweet from Amnesty, regarding trans children and the GRA:

"Our system is broken.
Trans children are outed, humiliated and left feeling alone and vulnerable.
The next government has a huge oppotunity to overhaul the Gender Recognition Act and prioritse #transrights. t.co/DnX3Nc3dvM "

twitter.com/AmnestyUK/status/1202845125971501058?s=19

Which got lots of replies, many pointing out that the GRA doesn't apply to children.

As Maya pointed out, Amnesty only replied to one person on that thread of many replies: Mermaids' lawyer:

"Where are the grown ups? [part II] Yesterday @AmnestyUK tweeted its campaign to allow the legal sex of children to be changed t.co/L9trsLC0Bj

It got a lot of comments. Serious comments.

Amnesty only responded to one.
Yay to @EnbyLawyer @Mermaids_Gender t.co/AIjCzDqSsl "

(The full thread from Maya is great, btw.)

And today, we get this from Mermaids:

"GRA reform needs to happen now, it needs to include young trans people, and we need your help ✍🏽

We partnered with @AmnestyUK and @Genderintell to urge the next Minister for Women and Equalities to reform the GRA.

Take action here: t.co/3CT7sb8GM8 #GetTransEqualityDone "

Fuck. Ing. Hell.

I think this is actually good-only because it is so blatantly terrifying it makes mermaids look extremely bad. As a society we should protect our young, and Mermaids are pushing hormones & medical intervention which is not necessary.....just let kids be kids.

Amnesty can go to hell. I supported them when they appeared to concern themselves with human rights issues. I cancelled my monthly contribution when I read of their position on “sex work”.

Goosefoot · 18/12/2019 20:04

What the heck went wrong with them?

My husband still gives them a monthly donation, their work with political prisoners has always been really important to him. I've had doubts about the causes they were adding to "human rights" for a while, but I think now I'm going to have to bring it up to him. He's going to be really put out that he can't support what they do any more.

Goosefoot · 18/12/2019 20:06

I think her highlighting the statement "everybody should have the right to be who they say they are" is absolutly correct. How can that be something coming from an organisation that works in a serious way for human rights?

Don't know if many people noticed this, but in the Scottish draft of GRA reform they are ALREADY dropping the age from 18 to 16.
