New Women and Equalities Minister?
duffed · 16/12/2019 22:30

Voted against same sex marriage...

Cwenthryth · 16/12/2019 22:33

Odd choice - she’s anti equal marriage (article from 3 months ago when she was appointed to DWP but not W&E) www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/09/08/cabinet-shifts-against-lgbt-rights-as-therese-coffey-replaces-amber-rudd/

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 16/12/2019 22:34

Please know what a woman is. Please, Therese. And have the guts to unapologetically say it.

Well this is going to be interesting...

Do you think she will meet Williamson by the water cooler and talk about sex Ed in schools?

tilder · 16/12/2019 22:40

Do you think she needs the word 'equality' explaining to her?

exwhyzed · 16/12/2019 22:41

Voted against same sex marriage you have to be really careful with this.

I don't know this person or their voting record, but theyworkforyou is very deeply flawed in that it doesn't distinguish between MPs who actually voted against something ideologically and MPs who voted against legislation because they thought it was badly written, or didn't go far enough to do the thing it was supposed to do.

Many left leaning MPs voted against the initial same sex marriage legislation because they thought it was bad, meaningless legislation that didn't go far enough to afford rights to people in same sex relationships.

They work for you also doesn't make it clear if a MP has been whipped to vote in a particular way.

LangCleg · 16/12/2019 22:49

If it is her, this Twitter thread by Rob Jessel will be of interest - he went to see her, armed with a Powerpoint!

OvaHere · 16/12/2019 22:49

Unusual choice given available information. I wonder why Liz Truss didn't keep it, she barely had it 2 minutes?

nettie434 · 16/12/2019 22:51

She has a reputation for being very traditional in her values and I do think the opposition to gay marriage is her own choice, not being whipped. I think she also supports the right of parents to withdraw children from sex and relationships education. Interestingly when she took over from Amber Rudd at DWP in September, she did not get the equalities portfolio so this is a change.

Justhadathought · 16/12/2019 22:56

I suspect that she is gay herself; but she is also a Catholic.

OhHolyJesus · 16/12/2019 23:00

Oh Lang that's brilliant news, thanks for sharing that link, I'm going to sleep peacefully tonight!

Cwenthryth · 16/12/2019 23:01

That @RobJessel Twitter thread, for non-tweepers:

Today I attended @theresecoffey 's surgery to talk about proposed changes to the GRA.

Her brief (and interests) tend to be farming, environment, rural affairs, etc., so I was expecting to do quite a lot of explaining.

Far from it.

I was surprised and pleased to find that she is well aware not only about the status of the proposed GRA reforms, but also the wider issues surrounding transgenderism.

She was very familiar, for example, with many of the issues contained within my presentation: for example the recent controversies at the Tavistock, males in women's prison, the impact of males in women's sports

Nevertheless, there were several things that she wasn't aware of, and she audibly gasped at a couple of points during the presentation.

For all our many differences on public policy, she is definitely a clear-sighted and informed ally on this issue.

YellaHumberElla · 16/12/2019 23:05

Wow!

Campervan69 · 16/12/2019 23:14

I am feeling very cheered by labour not getting into power and by the fact that Andrew Gilligan is working behind the scenes with Boris and now this. I feel I might be able to take a nice break over Christmas and then get back on it in the new year.

Binterested · 16/12/2019 23:25

Who would have thought my soul would be uplifted by a Boris Johnson cabinet Confused Where the heck are we and what happened to everything ?

stumbledin · 16/12/2019 23:25

TheyWorkForYou doesn't exist to tell people MPs motives, or whatever. It is meant to be a more accessible version of Hansard.

If you want to know why someone voted for something you would need to search to see if they have made a speech in whichever House explainging their motives. Or go to their constituency web site.

This is all the information they have on her - www.theyworkforyou.com/search/?q=Therese+Coffey - happy reading!

Birdsfoottrefoil · 16/12/2019 23:50

Voted against same sex marriage...

She is Catholic, and presumably not woke.

Cwenthryth · 16/12/2019 23:57

Andrew Gilligan is working behind the scenes with Boris

On what? Got any more on that? Im intrigued!

On Thérèse Coffey, I don’t feel uplifted by this at all. I think it’s totally wrong for this brief to be held by someone who is against equal marriage. Just because she doesn’t buy into magic sex changing gender ideology doesn’t mean she’s right for this role. I am saddened that we are in the position of celebrating any little crumb of hope TPTB drop our way. It is something, obviously a massive step forward in the efforts to battle self-ID reform, but it rings completely hollow coming from someone who would deny same-sex couples the right to marry. How far does her homophobia extend?

Perhaps she’s capable of divorcing (pun intended Xmas Wink) her own religious beliefs & personal morals from her role as advocate for equality and minority groups..... but I have serious concerns.

Plus it will be very easy for Dawn Butler, Pink News etc to point score against her I suspect. ‘Well she’s a massive homophobe anyway’ is a lazy ad hominem (ad feminam!) but once it’s uttered many people will instantly dismiss anything else she has to say.

ThePurported · 17/12/2019 00:29

How far does her homophobia extend?

Does voting against same-sex marriage automatically mean homophobia?

hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2013-02-05/debates/13020551000002/Marriage(SameSexCouples)Bill

6.15 pm
Dr Thérèse Coffey (Suffolk Coastal) (Con)

It is a privilege to take part in the debate. Speeches of high quality have been made by Members on both sides of the argument who feel passionately about the issue, and in general the tone has been measured.

I shall be voting against the Bill because my perspective on what marriage is really about is different from that of some other Members. Of course marriage is about loving commitment to one another, but for me it is fundamentally still about family, the bedrock of society. Marriage involves special provisions, such as support for the family and the procreation of children. Of course that is not the case for all families, for various reasons, but I nevertheless think those provisions are too important to be tampered with in rushed legislation that has not been subject to adequate consultation.

We can request as many legal opinions as we like, but the Government do not plan to indemnify any institution against legal costs if the measure is challenged in courts in this country or in the European Court of Human Rights. They are also continuing to confine civil partnerships to people of the same sex, perpetuating what is effectively a two-tier institution, either by not repealing the law or by denying it to people of opposite sexes. I feel that there are too many inconsistencies, and there is no doubt that the intertwining of Church of England law with the law of England is very difficult to unpick.

I think Members recognise that those who oppose the Bill do not oppose it because they are homophobes, or solely for religious reasons. In fact, more Catholic Conservative Members will be voting for the Bill than will be voting against it. It is fair to say, however, that there is concern about the way in which the Bill is being introduced. Not enough attention has been paid to the valid concerns of people who are genuinely frightened about the possibility, mentioned by my hon. Friend the Member for Congleton (Fiona Bruce), that they will be prosecuted if they do not offer weddings of all kinds. Although the Minister did not say this, legal advice suggests that people who work for councils will not be able to discriminate. I understand why that might be, but it is simply not valid to say that people will not be affected by the Bill.
I am not suggesting that the love between people of the same sex is something evil. History shows that it was Henry VIII who, at the same time as setting up the Church of England, criminalised homosexuality. That law was repealed by Queen Mary, a Catholic monarch, and reinstated by Elizabeth I. I should like to think that it is the Church of England that has played the principal role in some of that horrific abuse.

The Bill will probably be given a Second Reading, but it is important that the Government listen to all sorts of voices in Committee, and that those who are not selected as members of the Committee attend, make their views heard and table amendments.

I know that many other Members wish to speak. I thank them for their patience.

Cwenthryth · 17/12/2019 00:54

I do feel that opposing equal marriage is inherently homophobic, yes. That speech is the lady doth protest too much to me - ‘not suggesting homosexuality is evil’ is a pretty low bar! Not being able to see your own prejudice is a tricky thing as well, especially for this brief.

Thérèse Coffey is on the latest Any Questions from Friday/Saturday just gone, am just going to have a listen now (yay insomnia!). Layla Moran is on there too 🙄
