Being reported by fairplayforwomen but I can't find any other source.

Therese Coffey in apparently.

OP posts:

She's also anti abortion

So what? Do you seriously think Theresa Coffey will persuade Boris Johnson to introduce a bill banning abortion? Do you seriously think it would garner any support?

Needmoresleep · 18/12/2019 13:41

Yes. I suspect we are better off with someone with nothing to lose.

There is no way she could row back on either gay marriage or abortion. But equally no way she is going to be the guardian of the woke.

Yes I would prefer a minister who promoted women's rights in a sensible and considered way. But overall I would prefer someone who is very unlikely to be coopted by the TRA/Stonewall lobbies, than someone who is 'nice'.

Cwenthryth · 18/12/2019 13:53

Has anyone seen clarification on this - I tweeped TC but no reply (tbf her twitter profile says don’t expect one). Has BBC/express/attitude Xmas Grin issued a correction?

Binterested · 18/12/2019 13:55

Chastening to have someone anti abortion as women’s minister Shock. Perhaps I’ll have to settle for being pleased that it’s someone who knows which sex has abortions.

I think as has been mentioned on this thread the fact that the Women and Equalities web site has not been changed means that Liz Truss is still in post.

If for some reason she had stepped down, or Johnson had not decided who to appoint, the web site would say that.

I think - or it could be as I said about the media, that government also thinks it is such an irrelevancy (women's rights0 that they just cant be bothered to think about it.

Poota · 18/12/2019 16:54

I think it's understood that for whatever reason, the BBC cocked up.

Something that I had not realised until I spotted this in a 2018 reply from the Department for International Development, to an FOI Request made to the Government Equalities Office:

"In April 2018 the Secretary of State for International Development, Penny Mordaunt, was appointed Minister for Women and Equalities in addition to her existing portfolio. As the Government Equalities Office (GEO) is a Director-led unit, rather than an independent government department, initial receipt and management of FOIs is carried out by the Department for International Development (DFID) on behalf of GEO. DFID then direct FOIs to the relevant GEO officials in order to develop a response."

Just wondering if there might be a time-lag in updating the Government Equalities Office website when responsibility for GEO shifts between Government Dept's, ie. according to a Minister's Government responsibilities?

Anyone have any insight into the implications of GEO being a "Director-led unit" rather than "an independent Government Dept"?

Boris has only made appointments that he's had to make, where there was a vacancy caused by the election.

An interesting appointment will be the Chair of the Women & Equalities Committee, which is elected by Parliament, not the Government.

Maria Miller was re-elected unopposed in 2017:

I wonder if that might change?

TimeLady · 19/12/2019 07:38

Maria Miller was the only nominee in 2015 too, when the committee was established

MoleSmokes - Your post has reminded me that there did used to be a more seperate department, and they sent out regular updates and liased with women's groups (the women's sector). Wasn't there are organisation called NAW - National Assembly of Women - which was the process by which information from the grassroots was fed up to government departments. I know at the time everyone said it was about downgrading sidelingin women. Feel bad I have just forgotten all about it.

stumbledin · 19/12/2019 13:43

Sorry have to add that my memory is not that good.

NAW - National Assembly of Women is a leftist groups of women's organisation that has existed for years, and didn't as far as I know ever work with Government www.sisters.org.uk/

NAWO - National Assembly of Women's Organisation is the one (I think) Government used to consult with and still exisits. nawo.org.uk/

Sorry got intrigued. It looks like the GEO ceased to be an independent department in 2010. And has since then moved from Home Office to DoE and back again and ...

October 2007–May 2010 Harriet Harman Independent department
May 2010–September 2012 Theresa May Home Office
September 2012–April 2014 Maria Miller Department for Education
April–July 2014 Nicky Morgan (for women) Sajid Javid (for equalities)
July 2014–July 2016 Nicky Morgan
July 2016–January 2018 Justine Greening
January–April 2018 Amber Rudd Home Office
April 2018–April 2019 Penny Mordaunt Department for International Development
July–September 2019 Amber Rudd Department for Work and Pensions
September 2019-present Liz Truss Department for International Trade

I think a lot of people would have scrutinised the equal marriage proposals more carefully *including those who are gay or bisexual themselves, if they'd known what a trojan horse they would turn out to be. This is more true in the ROI but to a lesser extent in the uk.

OhHolyJesus · 29/01/2020 09:56

It has been announced that Caroline Noakes has got this role.

midclegs · 29/01/2020 13:23

I thought this was Liz Truss?

midclegs · 29/01/2020 13:24

Minister for Women and Equalities, Elizabeth Truss MP?

TiredofthisBSbutIstandwithLang · 29/01/2020 14:57

According to the penis news heading she is the new LGBT and Equalities chief. Women have been erased out of it. Not clicking on the article because there is no way I'm bumping up their reader numbers.

SunkissesBringBackLangCleg · 29/01/2020 15:50

YES! Goodbye and good riddance to Marie Miller! It was her - a Tory - who drew up the self ID plans back in 2015 during the Women's & Equalities select committee trans inquiry

SunkissesBringBackLangCleg · 29/01/2020 15:52

Ah, just seen there's already been a thread about this: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3806951-New-Chair-of-Women-Equalities-Committee-Caroline-Nokes-Edited-by-MNHQ-to-correct-typo-at-OPS-request
