If you were on twitter prior to the election you'd have thought Labour had won. Polls showing 20% for the Tories. Labour comprehensively won in the twittersphere. Meanwhile in the real world reality had its say. Similarly TRAs really only exist in twitter. We would do well to remind policy makers, John Lewis, M&S etc of that. You can't make policy based on twitter. If you do, prepare for the consequences.

Here’s a useful chart I found (on Twitter)

Such a good point. Corporates and other significant organisations should stop handing their social media accounts to 20 year olds. The NSPCC showed us how wrong they can get stuff due to echo chamber ideology, lack of experience and just a lack of common sense.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 14/12/2019 12:59

Yep. It's not just an echo chamber, it's a distorting hall of mirrors.

I saw Twitter (well, twitterstorms) being compared to a laser- very intense, but not very wide.

GCAcademic · 14/12/2019 14:25

Academic Twitter is full of people who genuinely can't understand how this happened, and wailing that they live in a country of thick, racist, bigots. Some of them spitefully hoping that the thick, racist bigots enjoy what's coming to them from the Tories.

My favourite one is from a known outrage performer from Cambridge who is calling everyone who voted Tory racist, unless they happen to be BAME themselves, in which case they are servile

ArranUpsideDown · 14/12/2019 14:30

Twitter is weird.

I certainly live in an area with very different views to mine and it's a bellwether (never voted other than with the overall result).

I was apprehensive it would be even more of a landslide, tbh. Definitely an areas where the generation that is die-hard Labour has been dying out (literally).

MintyMabel · 14/12/2019 14:41

Utter rubbish. TRAs exist everywhere. You just don’t hear them as to admit to it is asking for trouble.

MintyMabel · 14/12/2019 14:43

Also, what you see on Twitter is self selecting. My twitter feed didn’t swing to labour at all.

TiredofthisBS · 14/12/2019 14:50

This is what happens when you block everyone that doesn't agree with you. The room can't be read properly without seeing everything.

You should visit the politics forum on DigitalSpy having banned long time (Conservative voting) users. Fucking meltdown and confusion.

TiredofthisBS · 14/12/2019 15:40

I bet there is Name! I'll come as a shock to them that not all people think the same.

Poor analogy, the defining characteristic of lasers is coherence.Grin
