You have until tomorrow (Friday 13th) to submit a response to a public consultation on the introduction of hate-speech laws. I don't know if that means today is the last day or if submissions can be made tomorrow.

The supporting document specifically mentions potentially adding gender identity to the list of protected groups. I can't find the direct link to the supporting document (it is on the page linked to above) but will have a look.

Is sex not included?

I mean it never was before despite being protected characteristic but if they're adding stuff then that is pretty obvious? It's an obvious and huge omission (and we all know why it was omitted originally).

Sex was removed a few years ago in Ireland, without any real public knowledge, this is what we now have:

Gender
Civil status
Family status
Sexual orientation
Religion
Age (does not apply to a person under 16)
Disability
Race
Membership of the Traveller community

In UK pregnancy and maternity are protected characteristics. Also sex. But of course the hate crime stuff was different.

Anyway.

What's interesting is that the list you give ^ is all sex neutral. Sex itself is not included. I assume stuff like pregnancy is covered theoretically under family status... But that doesn't really fit does it. So they have stripped out all sex related discrimination, already.

@ForeverFaithless do you have any more detail about when sex was removed. I assume it was in some iteration/amendments to the equality act? If you could point to some info sources it would be much appreciated.

and why 'gender ID' before sex?

Presumably because it's assumed that we all identify with a gender and that perpetrators always check identity before doing the hate speech.
