So we had a gay couple on the ice skating and now they're looking for a drag queen for strictly? Why do we not have lesbians represented or a drag King? Why is it always the male version that gets priority?

Strictly is one of the few prime time entertainment shows where both lead presenter and sidekick are women

Ironically, I think this was because Claudia had been so successful when Bruce was ill. If he had just left and the BBC had advertised for a replacement, I bet this would not have happened. Claudia is the best paid woman at the BBC but she is still paid a lot less than Graham Norton or even Charlie from Casualty.

TimeLady · 01/12/2019 11:24

I used to start watching it 20 mins in on catch up so I could FF the Brucie bits.

I like Tess and Claudia, but they're nowhere near as good as Ant and Dec.

FKATondelayo · 01/12/2019 11:25

Strictly is the only reason I still pay a licence fee and it's tried my patience massively this series. I'm bored with it.

10s in week 2, judges being both obviously biased over-'positive' and over-marking, too many theatrical flourishes and not enough actual dancing and technique. There is too much focus on the personality and journey - like in Drag Race - when actually it's the dancing most people want to watch. I preferred it when they all focused on ballroom skill and BTS shagging

I think same sex will be interesting if it's M/M and W/W equally (in particular would love to see Karen with a female partner - she clearly enjoys shedding the glitter and playing androgynous characters). I also think it would make couples choice more innovative.

Drag, no thanks - that would be the nail in the coffin. If I want to watch a show about contouring, tucking and weaves, Rupaul is on iplayer. Agree with Timelady that drag is only interesting when it's satirical - like Lily Savage.

I was a bit disappointed with Craig TBH but he does have form for taking female parts in west end shows.

Timelady

This got me thinking. I have no issues with the excellent League of Gentlemen, for example.

Rosepetals30 · 01/12/2019 12:38

Isn’t drag their occupation? Well, the people they will be considering anyway? Most drag artists I know don’t get kitted out unless it’s for events/publicity - they are just themselves during the day

I mean should we be expecting actors to turn up in their character now too?

LangCleg · 01/12/2019 12:45

Yes, me too. I'm not as anti-drag as many feminists here - but only certain forms. The Woke version does nothing for me, sorry Ru Paul.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 01/12/2019 13:02

Goodness, this is all making me so angry. It's rage inducing just how much women are continually being fucked over! Angry

TimeLady · 01/12/2019 13:04

Dame Edna, the two Ronnies, Les Dawson, LoG - it was never really about the look, more the characterisation, the funny dialogue. CRH last night? That's not the vibe I was getting.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/12/2019 13:25

Who ever they get will be paired with Anton.

LangCleg · 01/12/2019 13:35

No amount of feminism could cause me to reject Cissie and Ada!

FKATondelayo · 01/12/2019 13:45

I am sure the producers thought about the physical differences between men & women and how that will play out in dances with same sex couples but what about drag queens? If they are dancing the women's part that will involve lots of lifts and, to be crude, crotch flashing.

Even if a drag queen could dance the Ashley part in her
(and it is a particularly pantsy one) would we want to watch that on a Saturday tea time?

Same with lifts - are they expecting the pro males to be able to throw a burly bloke around like this?

(I'm sure there are delicate and elfin drag queens but in 20 years of working in Canal Street and then Soho I've never seen many)

TimeLady · 01/12/2019 14:50

Two females together might prove to be tricky. The female pros would be at a disadvantage when it comes to doing lifts.

Clymene · 01/12/2019 16:32

I think they had to continue with Claudia. It would have been embarrassingly obvious they were ditching her for having a vagina and the rumbles about the sexism and discrepancy between pay between men and women was just starting.

It's funny how it's so unremarked then other way round though isn't it? Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman doesn't even raise an eyebrow

MorganKitten · 05/12/2019 00:20

About time, they need to catch up with the American and Australian versions of the show who have had drag and trans celebrities. Neither ‘replaced women’ they had the same amount of celebs male/female wise and brought in an extra show/swing dancer.

I grew up in the theatre and dance world, same sex ballroom isn’t new.

RageAgainstTheSnowMachine · 05/12/2019 00:40

how would an all male couple compete fairly against mixed sex couples? confused

In Italy the male sleb followed. It was good. He may have led one too iirc. But it was why Adam Ripon wanted a female partner on dts as he wanted to lead.

Courtney Act was brilliant on dwts Australia.

RageAgainstTheSnowMachine · 05/12/2019 00:44

All dances above.

Unlikely that Anton would get the drag queen partner actually, even though he said he was up for a same sex partnership, because someone like Cheryl Hole is very glam...more likely to get Gio or Aljaz.
They'd only go with Tony Beak if playing for laughs/broad comedy the whole time and would hope that Baga would go for more than that.
Anton himself did panto dame drag with the Sisters routine with Ann, less said about that the better.

RageAgainstTheSnowMachine · 05/12/2019 00:48

Oh and for those complaining about a woman moving over and not having equal number of men and women competing they never have that anyway...there is always one more man or woman as they do not have an even number of pros. So they would possibly do it in a year where they had more male pros than female pros for that year, it usually alternates.

RageAgainstTheSnowMachine · 05/12/2019 00:54

Here are the Italian same sex male couple
