Equality Now has fallen.

Women really are the only group not permitted to centre themselves in their own activism.

''Concerns about trans women’s inclusion - suspicious of or denying trans people’s identity or fearing that solidarity with them will undermine opportunities to progress women’s rights in conservative contexts - fail to acknowledge that transphobia is rooted in the same structural patriarchal gender discrimination that affects women and other marginalized genders.

Many governments have failed to secure the universality of human rights for women and girls as they allow the right to religious and cultural freedom to trump those of equality and non-discrimination.''

I'm not interested in obtaining religious and other freedoms for women from conservative and patriarchal control, in order to allow men to self identify as women.

So we need to rise above pur pettiness 🙄 and include men (again). After all look what can be achieved when women work together!

The follow these paragraphs. Wonder how many trans people were involved in these successes...

Equality Now has fallen.

Who actually are Equality Now ? I've never heard of them. And there are lotsof organisations around with grand-sounding names which turn out to be fully-funded by - well, unexpected people.

So who are they?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 30/11/2019 16:28

I googled, WhereYou. Set up by Gloria Steinem, some good campaigns, by the look of it:

'mission of ending violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world'

Hm. Spot the line in there framing allowing religious and cultural tolerance as a bad thing. That one's been coming for a while. It's the early stages of insisting that gender identity is a trump factor in the hierarchy of protected characteristics, or framing the excluding of women of faith and culture from women's spaces a Good Thing.

It's staggering how such truly ugly points of view can be dressed up and sent out in such pretty language.

Michelleoftheresistance · 30/11/2019 16:46

And yes it could mean addressing inequalities for women such as women living with restrictions such as not being allowed to live without the supervision of a male relative, the blind eye turned to some forms of domestic violence, inequality of Sharia law towards female people, but this has never been something the establishment has been interested in. Odd that it's appeared with a concerted campaign of males claiming female single sex spaces.

It's rather like the rainbow laces being all about gay inclusion in sports, which hasn't been of interest to anyone really in decades. But now when actually the terminology has been shifted so that homosexuality is no longer a 'thing' and that inclusion actually is mostly about males being permitted to compete as women, it's all over the place.

Qcng · 30/11/2019 16:52

Never heard of them.j

BickerinBrattle · 30/11/2019 16:53

Because some religions and cultures treat women and girls as lesser beings, women and girls in Western society must cease to exist as an ontological and political category.

Makes perfect sense.

Michelleoftheresistance · 30/11/2019 16:58

Sorry to harp on, but realised: of course the above would involve men from those religions and cultures to adapt their beliefs: to help those women you would have to address the perceptions of men. Can you see any group willing to do that with all the sensitive elements involved?

However if you want to exclude women who can't share spaces where they are in a state of undress with males, regardless of how those males identify - all you need to do is address the views of the general public to see those women as wrong. And therefore not to mind about their exclusion. The only women who would benefit from this or become empowered are the ones born male.

You'd further think that someone who identified as a woman would care about this.

I dont think Equality Now has fallen it has always been an "equality" rather than a feminism campaign.

Gloria Steinem was always (still is) a media creation of acceptable feminism. And so has always known which side of the line she is on. And Germaine Greer was always a media approved feminist rather than a feminist activist / women's liberationist. But the difference is she has always kicked at the establishment and has felt able to talk about women's sex based rights.

And Laura Bates is a contemporary equivlent. ie the process by which the patriarchy controls the public face of feminism. Only publishing and promoting the women who toe the line.

The reality is all have fallen. What would be nice is to post links to groups that haven't and been prepared to say so publicly.

Can anyone name one?!

LangCleg · 01/12/2019 09:26

The author of that article is Niki Kandirikirira, Equality Now's Director of Programmes. Before Equality Now, Niki Kandirikirira was previously Executive Director of Engender.

Yet again, we see how third sector orgs are staffed at the top from a small, nepotistic circle drawn from the bourgeois mediating class stuck in pomo-addled groupthink.

WhereYouLeftIt · 01/12/2019 18:50

Thanks @LangCleg.

So, yet another grand-sounding organisation that doesn't do what it says on the tin. I am getting so sick of this shit.
