Ohio Abortion Bill

HB 413 contains language that demands doctors take "all possible steps" to save an embryo or fetus, including "attempting to reimplant an ectopic pregnancy into the woman's uterus.

I am genuinely lost for words by this. There is a part of me that thinks this is a massive poe by the Republicans. Propose a law so extreme that it will be blocked so they can claim 'we tried to ban abortion, but the baby murdering liberals wouldn't allow it'.

But mostly I think that they really do hate women.

I felt sick reading this, ectopic pregnancy is life threatening and there are no medical procedures available to attempt re-implantation.
I agree ,they hate women, why else

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 29/11/2019 11:54

I was just reading about this too.. utterly horrifying. I know it's not much but at least medical professionals are speaking out against it.

Are they still pushing for this? Its so weird, surely no surgeon is going to agree to leave a dying fetus in your womb because of the risk of septecemia?

''(ectopic pregnancy).. is the leading cause of death in pregnant women in the first trimester.'' (in the US)

Grimbles · 29/11/2019 12:13

It's just so mind bogglingly stupid and raises so many questions about exactly how they think this is going to work and who would actually be liable for what when it goes wrong.

This is horrifying and demonstrates the total lack of medical knowledge on the part of lawmakers. Ridiculous laws like this are patently seeking to provoke a SC challenge.

OvaHere · 29/11/2019 12:51

Unbelievable that anyone could think this is feasible and comes anywhere near a pledge to do no harm.

CircleofWillis · 29/11/2019 13:43

I came on here to see if there was a thread about this already. The whole idea is ill informed, dangerous and utterly bonkers!

JPharm · 29/11/2019 14:28

Surely they can’t enforce this?

CloudPop · 29/11/2019 14:35

If ectopic pregnancies could simply be re implanted into the uterus, this would be a routine treatment for what is a dangerous and highly distressing experience for many women.

Melroses · 29/11/2019 14:47

From what I can work out, ectopic pregnancy is dealt with medically now, and if it is at the point where emergency surgery is required it is too late for anything but life saving surgery.

How do you get a foetus to reimplant somewhere else any way? Presumably once it has implanted in the wrong place, it is past the implantation stage and that is it.

Totally fantasy lawmaking.

Kit19 · 29/11/2019 14:47

What is wrong with these people??? Do they not think that if that was possible it wouldn’t be being done already?? As someone left infertile after ectopic pregnancies this makes me furious & upset in equal measures

PerkingFaintly · 29/11/2019 15:02

Yep, from the people who brought you the 6-week abortion limit (fortunately now blocked by legal action).

Ohio passed a six-week abortion ban last summer. The “heartbeat bill”, as supporters called it, banned abortion before most women know they are pregnant. Reproductive rights groups immediately sued, and the bill never went into effect.

PerkingFaintly · 29/11/2019 15:03

I'm going with: they really do hate women.

BickerinBrattle · 29/11/2019 15:21

The truth is, yes, Americans are astonishingly uneducated. When we lived in the U.K., the schooling my daughter got in the primary grades was miles ahead of what she’d have gotten in the US.

Years and years of anti-tax crusades have had their effect on schools, except in the wealthiest areas. (Schools are funded by county taxes.)

America has some of the finest universities in the world (which also cost a fortune in tuition) but it has, I think, on the whole, the worst primary and secondary schools in the developed world.

And for every Stanford or Harvard, there are 100 state colleges where it’s possible to get a crap degree in business or one of the social sciences where the class work is at what rightly ought to be secondary level. Believe it or not, I’ve sat in on seminars in senior history seminars where the students were gathered around the table fulfilling an assignment to design history book covers with crayons.

And yes, right wing Christians in the US regard women as little more than pregnancy vessels.
