900,000 views so far:

Segment starts at around 1.45.00

I listen to a lot of Joe Rogan podcasts and while he isn’t a feminist he often comes down on the GC side of the trans debate (father of daughters, expert in martial arts). He’s previously asked Jack (CEO of Twitter) why Megan Murphy got banned. Nonetheless, I didn’t expect this!

Tulsi Gabbard is my favourite of the democratic candidates, she’s a military veteran who served 12 months in Iraq, current congresswoman for a district in Hawaii and is running for president on funds contributed by individual people, refusing corporate pac money.
She stood down as vice chair of the DNC to endorse Bernie Sanders in 2016.

She comes at it from a staunch pro free speech angle and says she hasn’t come across the term before (I suppose that might be true if you aren’t on Mumsnet). I’ve not watched the whole thing yet (Rogan’s podcasts average at about 3 hours).

On youtube you can actually link to the particular part of a video:

Thanks OP. I love Tulsi Gabbard too. She did a great interview with Dave Rubin too.

When does the q about witches come up?

Backinthecloset123 · 27/11/2019 22:35

qcng the 2nd link by nauticant goes straight to the spot.
Joe doesn't really get it, apart from the sport and child angles.
I wish he'd have Posie Parker on.

Thanks for that, I just watched the shorter clip. Joe's great, he might not be a feminist but he sure knows mixed sex sports is not the way forward for women.

Interesting discussion about the ‘cancel culture’ and the chilling effect on freedom of speech.

LangCleg · 27/11/2019 22:45

I like Gabbard of all the blue candidates too. And I bet she does know what a forbidden-on-FWR-as-a-sop-to-the-women is!

Joe Rogan does not 'get' it from a woman's point of view. I have seen him express the view that you could not possibly expect Blair White to use the men's toilets, for example (er, yes, Joe, I absolutely think all XY trans people, no matter how expensive their facial feminisation surgery and silicone implants may be, should use the men's facilities).

He does, however, get it from a free speech point of view, and a sporting fairness and safety point of view (he has had some interesting discussions on oestrogen protecting bone density and on the effect of testosterone as HRT in older men for example). He also has a lot to say about the over medicalization of children, not just in terms of the trans issue, but more widely (he's agin it).

I can't say as I always agree with him but he's worth a listen and I watch his podcasts when he has someone who interests me on.

Heading for 1 and a half million views.

Wonder how many people will google the T word and end up down the rabbit hole?

We have Gin ready.

If she knows what a what is? I don't really like either of them, (IMO smarmy, insincere, full of shit, not half as smart as they think they are politicos-pundits) but this conversation needs to be had in public to as wide an audience as possible.

Qcng · 28/11/2019 09:03

Joe Rogan was the first person that I saw talking about Fallon Fox, he was rightly aghast and described very clearly the difference between FF's body and those of her opponents.
So he definitely gets the sporting issue.

Set it's banned term on here but the think if you're using it hypothetically to describe it's use, not actually calling anyone the thing then it's ok - "Terf".

Yep. Which is why I’m excited about this! I never really watch these videos, just have them on in the background while doing stuff, if something interesting comes up I sometimes go back to look at facial expressions, I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see Tulsi’s face while Joe was talking about Megan Murphy.

There were two other comments about trans stuff before it was brought up explicitly. Neither bit did I actually see, but I’m wondering if Joe was testing the water to see how Tulsi would react (bearing in mind that a bunch of the candidates have pronouns in their twitter bios).

The first was (IIRC) talking about the kinds of things ordinary people are concerned about and (paraphrasing) ‘a six foot plus man in their daughter’s sports team’ was listed, and later on ‘non-binary’ was said in a light hearted way.

I’m just cheerleading every time the topic hits the public discourse and isn’t immediately dismissed as bigotry and in those terms, this was definitely a win.

Gabbard gets the culture war, champions open discourse and isn’t frantically signalling her wokeness. It’s practically miraculous.
