Does MN have a problem with trans people? **MNHQ edited title as OP has apologised for 'accusatory' tone**

Seem to be threads constantly on the issue of trans.

Why?

Is it because it conflicts with the idea of sex as a construct?

Is it an age thing?

There must be mums on here with trans kids - do you just stay out of it?

Why the obsession with the idea of being attacked by trans women? Is it not the modern equivalent of homophobic blokes all thinking gay men want to rape them?

@BertrandRussell hi there. The issue I'd read about was Rachel McKinnon winning a track cycling championship. 2 parts of this story made me think it was fair enough.

  1. The rules for trans women to compete say they must have hormone therapy and a level of testosterone lower than x.
  2. One of her competitors had beaten her on numerous occasions as recently as that week.

Thoughts?

lemonsqueasy · 27/11/2019 10:05

@BovaryX I'm sorry I'm new to the idea of it being an insult. I'll stop.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 27/11/2019 10:06

I see we've moved on while I did the school run. But on the topic of having an 'intangible sense' that determines reality, a couple of weeks ago I was utterly convinced that my body was actually literally dead.

Hope you're doing better now, Tyro.

Lemon..
IF I were to refer to a trans woman and say the bloke(sorry!) is over there. Is that acceptable? Or is it just biological women whose feelings and opinions don't matter? Trans women are women and women are cis women, right?

FloralBunting · 27/11/2019 10:06

Yeah, I think using Veronica McKinnon (as i believe is McKinnon's current appellation) is probably not going to be tremendously convincing.

lemonsqueasy · 27/11/2019 10:08

So rather than having surgery / hormone replacement, trans people should have therapy? Genuinely asking.

Devereux1 · 27/11/2019 10:09

@lemonsqueasy

If I said I was a waterfall, do you think I should

a) have therapy
b) transform my body into some approximation of a waterfall?

lemonsqueasy · 27/11/2019 10:10

@FloralBunting no longer trying to convince anyone

BovaryX · 27/11/2019 10:10

Lemon, you’re new to the idea that on a feminist forum when numerous posters tell you to stop using an offensive, redundant prefix you should do so? Bizarre

DickKerrLadies · 27/11/2019 10:11

I'm not a c*s woman. I don't have a gender identity and if I do then it is not the gender of woman. I do not identify with that gender.

Personally, I don't mind the OP talking about cs women (although it is against guidelines and technically deletable) but I hope OP understands that most of us here are not cs and talking about c*s women does not include us.

It would be nice though, as OP is using that word for clarity purposes, if we could also use unambiguous terms for clarity purposes.

lemon, some actual proper psychological investigation would be infinitely preferable to making children lifelong medical patients based on their difficulties with stereotypes and their bodily discomfort, yes.

FloralBunting · 27/11/2019 10:14

lemon, I have politely asked you not to use the @ function with my name. There's no need.

AlunWynsKnee · 27/11/2019 10:15

Devereux1 my pelvic floor appears to want to be a waterfall all by itself these days Grin

DickKerrLadies · 27/11/2019 10:15

So rather than having surgery / hormone replacement, trans people should have therapy?

Why does it have to be an either/or situation?

Again, it depends what you mean by trans people, but for those suffering from dysphoria, yes I feel that they should have therapy to explore all the issues before taking the drastic approach of medical treatment. The fact that detransitioners exist shows that medical transition is not always the answer and that perhaps we shouldn't be rushing people who are suffering into something that we don't even know helps.

Because there's not just one type of trans now, medication and surgery should not be the immediate option.

That's a much better argument for limiting people's ability to make jokes than the Special Rules, imo.

user6289264 · 27/11/2019 10:17

@lemonsqueasy Are you asking me?
If so, I'd actually like to calmly discuss. But presumably by your lack of reply to my thoughts you are against the psychology being studied? Blind acceptance only, no questions, is that right?
Do you think those traumatised women & men who have detransitioned are scarred for life physically and mentally should've received extensive therapy/counselling first? Do you think that would've benefited them?

DickKerrLadies · 27/11/2019 10:18

OP, did I miss your explanation of what you mean by a female gender that is distinct to one's sex? I may have done.

Gangrenethatmightwork · 27/11/2019 10:19

169 posts and @tryandempathise has not come back... he must have come to his senses!

AlunWynsKnee · 27/11/2019 10:20

Sorry Prodigal Grin

Gangrenethatmightwork · 27/11/2019 10:20

@Devereux1 don't go chasing waterfalls.

TyroSaysMeow · 27/11/2019 10:24

Much better now I'm not hallucinating, Kittens.

There was a young XX trans person in the female-only facility I ended up in. I'm bloody glad that person wasn't sent to a male-only place; I don't care if that makes me a terrible person.

The testosterone thing does not change bone density, size, lung capacity and all the advantages that training as a man gives a person. Also, are you suggesting that there should be testosterone testing for all participants in all sports at any level?

Yes- McKinnon had been beaten. But interestingly, not when it really mattered.

Are you aware of Hannah Mouncey?
