Several thousand people marched in France on Saturday to protest against alarming levels of deadly domestic violence against women, which the president, Emmanuel Macron, has called “France’s shame”.

Full article in the Guardian here

I am French and i was there.

Macron is correct. All french people should be ashamed of the numbers. In 2019, 137 women have been killed by their husband / boyfriend / ex. The number is still growing.

The march today was also to protest against all type of violence against women (FGM, street harassment, violence by medical staff, consent issue...)

Well done French ladies. Wonder if such a thing would take off here or do we have too many NAMALTS floating around

Men don’t like facing up to the things some members of their sex do.

I wondered what the equivalent for the UK was, and found this, dated September of this year. France may be worse, but it's bad enough here.
www.bbc.com/news/uk-49459674 with the headline "Domestic violence killings reach five-year high".

Last year, 173 people were killed in domestic violence-related homicides... the vast majority of victims are women.

TeiTetua · 23/11/2019 21:53

Actually I think the numbers are about the same, but there aren't any protests going on here.

GCinfrance · 24/11/2019 07:32

The fact that this number is not known / is not easily available does not help people to understand the scale of the issue.
There is in France a Facebook page created by feminist volunteers who I presume look into all local newspapers and post an article everytime a woman is killed with a short explanation of who she is / how she was killed. This number is then widely shared by all of us on facebook. Unfortunately last night the killing of an other woman was reportered and the number given by this group is now 138.
There was an article yesterday on the number of women killed in Europe (reported by BFM tv, source is eurostat). In 2017, the 'top 3' countries were: Germany ( 153 women killed), France (108) and UK (63). Note that if we report these number in percentage of the population, the ranking is totally different (Finland and Estern Europe countries are top 5).
Unfortunately, I don't think that 50000 people would have walked yesterday if the protest was 'only' about domestic violence. In my opinion, seeing the signs people were carrying around me, it is because it was against all type of sexual violence / sexist behaviour that so many people were there (just an other number, 93000 women are raped or tentatively raped in France each year).

At least two police forces on Thursday held silences, waved the trans flag and performed a ceremony for Trans Day Of Remembrance.

Number of trans people murdered in the last year in the UK: 1, and it has nothing to do with them being trans (they were killed by their TRA lover).

No police force holds silences etc for women killed.

These latest figures show that it's now nearly 4 women a week in the UK who are killed for being women.

The latest Rose of Dawn video also shows that of the 331 trans people who have apparently died globally, almost all were killed for reasons that had nothing to do with them being trans (most were Brazilian or Mexican prostitutes and proportionally more female Brazilian and Mexican prostitutes die per year than trans) and some weren't even trans at all.

Plus you've still got TRAs like teacher Holly Rigby who appeared on Politics Live to say half of trans teenagers have attempted suicide in the last year, when a) that's completely untrue, is a stat that was debunked years ago and the actual number is less than 1% and b) the only study into this has shown teenagers are more likely to have suicidal thoughts if they start taking puberty blockers or hormones. Plus there's the horrific case of Jayden Lowe, the teenager who commited suicide last year after illegally being given hormones by Mermaids' doctor Helen Webberley

I also saw a campaign by Seria A (??) footballers with red paint daubed on their faces to protest against violence to women. I only saw it in passing on twitter but haven’t seen it mentioned elsewhere.

Can I also ask - how many children murdered every year in this country (by family and otherwise?). When is their fucking day? Or kids raped by other kids (pornification of cultures and lush for mixed sex areas) - when is their day of rage?
