Clearly they don't want my vote. They're not getting it.

Ah, bugger. I was gonna vote them coz of the Brexit thing too. Ah well, their loss.

CranberriesChoccy · 22/11/2019 17:48

I keep seeing on other platforms people calling MN'ers angry so-and-sos. From those screenshots posted and my own experience too, TRA's can barely string a sentence together without calling women names.

iswhois · 22/11/2019 17:48

Is there any party who is against this?

I don't know who to vote for now and don't want to waste my vote

BadgertheBodger · 22/11/2019 17:50

Yeah there’s a lot of weird stuff said about Tim Farron. He used to be my MP and he was great. As Don says, a proper liberal. He voted in favour of equal marriage 3 times. I think people forget that true liberalism is much more, “I may not agree with what you say but I will defend your right to say it” whereas the strange folx who seem to be running the LDs at the moment seem more in the thinly veiled dictator mode. Agree with PP, they must just not want to be elected.

somebrightmorning · 22/11/2019 17:52

I think Goosefoot raises a key point.

How to genuinely engage? (as opposed to how to refute on here).

To me, the problem is that GC people are often telling a complicated story. I'm a litigator and know it's crucial to your chances of winning to be the party with the shorter simpler story. Something that can be put in a sentence. Hmm, perhaps this brings us back to language? That the simple statements/phrases have been taken away from us?

Ereshkigal · 22/11/2019 18:05

Tim Fallon could scarcely bring himself to accept that it was OK for people to be same-sex attracted

Ironically probably in line with many TRAs, though for different reasons...

FWRLurker · 22/11/2019 18:09

I think “Woman = adult human female” is a good start. Sex is a reality for women, a reality that is

We have to be able to talk about relevant differences in how the law and society treats people born with female bodies.

Anyone who objects to this is grasping at straws. There’s no racist parallel for this statement. quite the opposite - there’s a direct civil rights parallel dating back to the 19th century. We have to be able to talk about relevant differences in the way that law and society treat people born black or born immigrants or born poor or born female.

We also need to protect the freedom of speech and expression for people who want to present themselves in the accoutrements stereotypically associated with the opposite sex.

The only response that’s possible is for the trans activists to argue that trans women were “born female” which is obvious nonsense.

Antibles · 22/11/2019 18:28

Hmm, perhaps this brings us back to language?

AGP has badged itself as trans and given itself a teflon coating. I think the very word trans is acting like rohypnol, much like the pronouns.

JellySlice · 22/11/2019 18:37

The trouble, I find, with soundbites like "Woman = Adult Human Female", "Woman don't have penises" and "Sex is observed at birth, not assigned", is that they are often responded to with variations on "Why can't you just be kind?" and "Why can't you accept that people are different?"

Personally, I like "Humans cannot change sex. An adult may fantasise about changing sex, but I do not consent to being made to join in with his fantasy."

But apparently that's not kind, either.

nevermorelenore · 22/11/2019 18:38

Oh for fuck sake. I was going to vote Lib Dem. They were the first party I ever voted for and I only stopped because of the betrayal over tuition fees. But I thought JS seemed like a good choice and more sensible than the main two parties so was planning to return to them.

Don’t vote for us if you’re a _ (insert anything here) seems like a poor election campaign.

Findumdum1 · 22/11/2019 19:49

are these student political groups like Young Liberals officially sanctioned by the party HQ? I only ask because I asked my local LD councillor in the pub the other day "but what about about self id?" and he had literally never heard of it. I'm finding it hard to reconcile the kindly, middle aged retired teachers that run the liberal party round here with those absolute donkeys on twitter.

I think for the first time ever I'm going to have to do the unthinkable and abstain.

Ummmmcake · 22/11/2019 20:12

Sorry, but usually when people add print screens from twitter or whatever, I can't read them at all even after I click on them. What did the text on the black background say?

Figureof80 · 23/11/2019 10:39

@Ummmmcake
Text on the black background:

Tweet says, “Be very sure I won’t be voting LibDem.”
Cardiff University Liberal Democrats reply, “No worries, we probably don’t want you.”
Tweet replies, “Are you sure your party can afford to alienate 50% of the population in favour of 1%?
Cardiff University Liberal Democrats reply, “You don’t represent women, you represent bigots and transphobes. Kindly piss off now.”

So the take home message from the Liberal Democrats is, "women kindly piss off now."

I have voted LibDem in the past, never again. This is irretrievable.
CranberriesChoccy · 23/11/2019 10:46

I've been looking at the best way to vote but not vote, meaning making it obvious that it's not a mistake or ambiguous. I've never doe that before but with just a couple of weeks to go I don't see much choice.

JellySlice · 23/11/2019 11:09

Cardiff University Liberal Democrats reply, “No worries, we probably don’t want you.”

What a headstrong, young reply. No thought for consequences or for the future.

"The brain is very much still under construction until 25 and the last bit to develop is being able to think about long-term consequences, and so that's why with adolescents we often see behaviour that's more about the kind of short-term gain and what's important for me right now. " Vicki Lee, a psychologist who works alongside paediatricians and dietitians in the Bradford Children's Diabetes Service.

koshkat · 23/11/2019 11:12

The Lib Dems are an absolute joke. I cannot believe that any woman would vote for them even though I know that a few hundred of blue haired lib fems proabably will.

Fuck 'em.

Findumdum1 · 23/11/2019 11:14

But who can I vote for then, as a gender critical feminist who likes being part of Europe?

MockersFactCheckMN · 23/11/2019 12:32

...But by saying, “You don’t represent women, you represent bigots and transphobes," they are only echoing the noble baroness.

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/11/2019 12:36

The Youth wing have always had erm interesting views. Sometimes it's been amazing like the direct action against apartheid. Mostly though it's been batshit.

FadingStar · 23/11/2019 12:44

There really can't be any uncertainty among voters now that the Liberal Democrats are gleefully, revoltingly misogynistic. They don't even try to hide it. They seem to think it's a selling point ffs. Insane losers.

BovaryX · 23/11/2019 13:13

Yep. I struggle to see how anyone who regards this as a significant feminist issue could vote for them. A really dislikable party bandwagon jumping to score woke points while trashing and insulting 50 per cent of the electorate. Hell no

Callmejudith · 23/11/2019 13:36

So gutted I missed the Lib Dem canvasser this morning

DodoPatrol · 23/11/2019 13:45

I absolutely do not want my vote to be taken as support for Brexit. That’s what is keeping me awake at night.

(Well, that and family angst, disability angst, trans-family-member angst and heartburn!)

justcly · 23/11/2019 13:54

I think the appropriate response to any party representative trotting out "You don't represent women" is "Well someone needs to. We clearly can't leave it to you".
