From the manifesto:

labour.org.uk/manifesto/tackle-poverty-and-inequality/

"Ensure that the single-sex-based exemptions contained in the Equality Act 2010 are understood and fully enforced in service provision."

This is quite something.

Until it is 100% clear i suspect weasely words

They seem to be the masters of saying meaningless things although I am sure most politicians do that.

Floisme · 22/11/2019 13:06

Sorry the 'yup' was to Needmoresleep

GeordieTerf · 22/11/2019 13:06

This is so patronizing. The fact that Labour thought they could trick us all highlights exactly how they think about women.

Pathetic.

teawamutu · 22/11/2019 13:08

I did note Dawn Butler thanked everyone who submitted ideas for the manifesto. Would love to think those of us who took the time to mail had a tiny impact.

DuMondeB · 22/11/2019 13:09

A couple more of the known trans candidates/aspiring candidates:

Emily Brothers (former candidate in Sutton and Cheam) failed to be selected for Liverpool Derby West (not an AWS):

In September, Eddie Izzard was announcing his final comedy tour before committing to politics full time, stating that he would be standing in the next election. Guess he didn’t expect it to come quite so soon, because as far as I can tell, he didn’t apply for selection anywhere:

Just seen this from Labour Press Office. Very mixed messages going out. I'm assuming that some serious tribal infighting has broken out within Labour as a result of this manifesto promise.

Yes. It'll be like the early days of Corbyn all over again. They'll all be contradicting each other wherever you look.

Nobody votes for a party that does that, whatever the issue.

I despair.

skql · 22/11/2019 13:17

@Floisme

i'm pessimistic...
when self id law passed, there will be no extra time there.
what exemptions they made that include everyone.

and i feels it's like exact NHS policy.
"we strongly supports woman's place and sex segregation but
everyone can self id."

and they will keep forcing gender ideology in school and uni.

Kit19 · 22/11/2019 13:18

some of the word salad responses to that tweet from Butler are doing my head in.....

you so nearly had me thinking you were cautiously starting the row back Labour but fuck you! plus the idea that Dawn Butler would have actual power to enact her woo policy fills me with horror

EverardDigby · 22/11/2019 13:20

It’s illegal to discriminate against people undergoing gender reassignment under the EA, just as it’s legal to have single sex exemptions. I still haven’t seen anything that helps me to understand exactly what they mean!

DuMondeB · 22/11/2019 13:22

We don’t want to discriminate against trans people, we just want single sex services where appropriate.

Like, I much prefer getting a smear test from a woman, because she is likely to have or have had a cervix and thus knows how it feels to be the in my position.
A transman in need of a cervical smear would also benefit from having it done by a female health care professional (and good notes that make it clear that the patient presents as male but definitely has a cervix).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/11/2019 13:22

According to Sam Coates (Sky) there has been another "clarification":

Labour promises to keep single-sex exemptions
CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 22/11/2019 13:22

I still haven’t seen anything that helps me to understand exactly what they mean!

They mean "Vote for us"

CeridwenTheWitch · 22/11/2019 13:22

I don't trust Labour anymore. It doesn't make sense for them to turn around to suddenly support women after they've been pushing self ID for years. They've treated a lot of women badly and haven't condemned the abuse that women have had from trans activists. I feel like they just want us to vote for them, then they'll try to redefine 'sex' as 'anyone who identifies as the female sex' or something.

skql · 22/11/2019 13:23

plus

i think if self id get legal position, it's more legit to teach
kids gender ideology.
more legit to trans children and more open minded sex ed.
and there's less free speech on that.

ThePurported · 22/11/2019 13:23

So according to Dawn Butler, Labour will introduce self ID and remove 'outdated language' from the Equalities Act?
Which bits exactly? Does it mean removal of the single-sex exemptions, as demanded by Stonewall?

Sorry Labour, it's a fuck off from me.

Needmoresleep · 22/11/2019 13:24

"That is illegal and it will stay illegal" so we intend to change the law.

Dear Dawn.....

GCAcademic · 22/11/2019 13:25

The "clarification" is yet more fence-sitting and obfuscation.

mement0mori · 22/11/2019 13:26

To me, the sneakiness is worse than anything. The ambiguity smacks of being deliberate. Otherwise why not just come out and clarify?

Exactly! They say they will ensure that the SB exemptions are understood so presumably they must already know what their understanding of the SB exemptions are. So why not state this openly and clearly. It’s dishonest and disingenuous and leaves the door open for them to do whatever they like once / if they are elected.

OvaHere · 22/11/2019 13:28

LOL

Labour promises to keep single-sex exemptions
CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 22/11/2019 13:29

Oh that's a brilliant tweet.

Needmoresleep · 22/11/2019 13:29

The take away message is that women will buy this policy "pat on the head", because they are not very bright and easily pleased.

Wrong!

Birdsfoottrefoil · 22/11/2019 13:30

Everard
If you have three men, one ids as a transwoman and therefore protected under gender reassignment, and another who is Indian, you must treat all three men the same. You can not deny the Indian man a service or treat him less fairly because of his race, and you cannot treat the transwoman differently from the other two men due to gender reassignment.

Single sex spaces are designed to overcome discrimination against women and enable them to access services etc on an equal footing to men. This is based on people’s sex (or legal sex if they hold a GRC) and has nothing to do with gender reassignment. If someone holds a GRC they may still be excluded from some places based on their biological sex.

DuMondeB · 22/11/2019 13:30

That is a good tweet.

Datun · 22/11/2019 13:30

Why should women feel unsafe because of the cultural shift to make LGBT more inclusive, you numpties???

Ugh.

And ' no spaces will be permitted to discriminate against trans people'.

When trans people is anyone you like? So no spaces will discriminate against who? - paedophiles, predators, rapists?

Complete word salad.
