“I heard that 25% of prostitutes”

I was listening to the “Caitlyn Jenner: Honesty” episode on the BBC’s “Don’t tell me the score”. This episode could be useful to someone like me who is too young/British to know of Jenner’s sporting success. I don’t wish to comment on the title and it’s a long episode, but there are a few wtf moments despite the vair gentle interviewing.
Anyway, at 1 hour 5 minutes, Caitlyn says “I’ve heard that 25% of all prostitutes are trans women”. Surely not? Has anyone any other info on this? This was in the context of trans deaths in the US, politics etc. if that helps at all..

It could be the other way round? 25% of transwomen are prostitutes?

I'm calling bibbedy-bobbedy bullshit.

There may be a significant proportion of transwomen who are prostituted in the US and in South America, particularly if they are black or from another ethnic minority, but I seriously doubt a full quarter of prostituted people are trans. And definitely not in the UK.

How does that that work then?

I can't imagine the type of bloke who uses prostitutes being okay with that.

What am I missing?

Caitlin also felt that the reason straight men didn't compliment Caitlin on their looks is because the men 'lacked confidence'.

Not a refrain you generally hear from 70-year-old women.

Sorry, pressed too soon. So it appears to me as though Caitlin Jenner has a fairly unrealistic perception generally.

It seemed such a totally preposterous statement. And the episode, which was pre-recorded, was still broadcast with that in. No challenge at all (but the whole thing was very naice. We do seem to be very post truth.

It'll be another of these "use the stats from Rio/Manilla and pretend they're the same in London/New York" jobs (cf transwomen "are the group most at risk of being murdered").

It cannot possibly apply to the UK. I agree it sounds like a Rio/Manilla statistic.

I'm not going to google that, but if it is true I expect there's a study somewhere that will back it up. I don't expect the remaining 80% are women who just happen to love sex though.

In some US states you can only claim unemployment benefits for a year. So after that you can only get minimal assistance if you are disabled or a lone parent.

The US has lone parents and their children living on the street, sleeping under bridges and in cars. It wouldn't surprise me if the majority of the 80% are desperate women who have no other way to earn. The US certainly has a problem with sex trafficking, especially minors, and that's happening in the UK as well.
A system thats happy to create damaged children isn't going to care about healthy adults.

If anyone really wants to tackle prostitution maybe they can start with the lack of affordable social housing and the benefits system that would prefer to let people starve, or be prostituted.

Maybe in South East Asia. Sometime ago I worked in a country not a million miles from Thailand and male colleagues, strong-armed into taking visitors out on the razzle, got some pleasure in failing to point out that the lovely lady a visitor was trying to pick up was in fact a lovely lady-boy.

There's no way Caitlyn Jenner is right.

In Thailand there is possibly, arguably, about 25% of prostitutes who are born male presenting as women, because they have a long history of Kathoey, many of whom will will work in the sex trade. *

The other 75% will be females presenting as women or a small minority of males presenting as men.

The majority of prostitutes are actual female women.

The majority of transwomen are attracted to females, so it's unlikely those TW will have sex with men for money. The vast majority of punters paying for prostitutes are men. Unless they're only talking about a country in South East Asia, or maybe Brazil.

All I really care about is that male entitlement to sex enables the sex industry, which harms women overall, even a few of those "women" are male.

*(I have actually been to Thailand, spent a lot of time on the night-scene, and in the pick-up bars I'd say the likelihood of Kathoey was about 10%, but maybe I'm just not perceptive enough and it may have been 25% at a stretch)

It's 13.2% of sex workers in the US are Transwomen according to a 2018 survey and a 2009 survey for Europe estimates it at 6%.

There hasn't been a focused study working on trans sex workers so the data is extrapolated further etc etc.

But yes her 25% was likely US based stats that were focused on the extrapolated data due to the small scale studies.

Caitlin Jenner probably doesn't mean just men going to a prostitute thinking they are seeing a woman. She I assume is including male bodied men who present as women.

There is massive fetishism around transwomen who still have male (usually working) male genitalia. Men are deliberately booking appointments to see sex workers who dress like women and have breast implants but have a working penis. This isn't just an East Asian thing.

25% seems a little high, but 10-15% seems plausible.

As long as homophobia/toxic masculinity remains so rampant there will be a lot of “straight identified” (but actually gay and bi) men who seek transwomen prostitutes. That way they can keep up the charade that they are “straight” while getting the sex they actually want.

Dishonest closeted men like this are probably more likely than the average man to use a prostitute because of the inherent need to maintain Secrecy to stay in the closet.

Hopefully as more men accept that it’s OK to be gay this will decrease. But who knows

I thought, according to trans ideology, that being a prostitute was empowering? Caitlin should be pleased. Unless they are a swerf?

There are a lot of MTF trans people in Brazil but I can't believe that proportion is accurate even there. There are also an awful lot of female prostitutes, many underage.
