Thank you @definitelygc. Those tweets are priceless!

Good luck Maya! Regardless of the outcome, you are a winner!

ResistSexism · 19/11/2019 06:10

Yes, very best of luck today Maya Flowers

cordeliavorkosigan · 19/11/2019 06:11

Thanks for the thread and all the updates.

If it goes in favour of being legally required to treat everyone as they identify, then I suspect that there are a lot of people out there in the Commonwealth who identify as British citizens... Do we also owe them this kind of allegiance to their internal, experienced cultural identities, to confer on them the rights and privileges of their true identity?

I shall await my shiny new passport. And those of my British-identified friends and family.
On the plus side, it'll change the NHS / EU/ Brexit drama quite a bit...

Good luck Maya!

NonnyMouse1337 · 19/11/2019 06:33

It would have saved me a lot of money and time if I could have identified as a British citizen. The person at the Home Office was confused when I phoned their helpline years ago. He said 'you don't sound like you need a visa' ... (Confused)
Ah if only, my friend....

cordeliavorkosigan · 19/11/2019 07:12

metro.co.uk/2019/11/18/anyone-allowed-identify-black-regardless-skin-colour-11173537/

Actually I was (mostly) joking as you will all have known ... but maybe British-ness really will be next. Seems like race, LGBTQ+ ,disability - all fair game. Will parking thread CFs self-ID and seek blue badges?

HandsOffMyRights · 19/11/2019 07:18

Thanks definitelygc and good luck Maya.

But I wonder just how gender non-conforming you have to be to become "non binary" or trans

Well, J.Bradley had long hair and a wife, so a real rebel. I think Sam Smith had some nail polish on the other week (and a penis earring?) Miley Cyrus had short hair, which she kept for her wedding and was applauded for being progressive.
Clearly, huge efforts. I guess we will never understand the true struggle of non binary/,gender fluidity 🤔

I have my son's socks on today so might go in and ask all my colleagues to respect my identity, my true self. The bigots.

AutumnCrow · 19/11/2019 07:53

Thank you Maya @MForstater for doing all of this to shine a light on what's been going on, and thank you @definitelygc for preserving the tweet narrative.

Gender ideology is terribly narcissistic at its heart. It seems to be saying, 'If you disagree with me and piss me off, then that's got to be the same thing as being illegal.'

And so its adherents use their education, contacts and privilege to try to re-frame the actual nature of the law. They also tell outright lies because they're full of the sort of entitlement, self-absorption and self-pity I've also glimpsed lately in the Duke of York's disastrous interview with Emily Maitliss.

IfNot · 19/11/2019 07:59

Whenever I read the phrase "respect my identity" I always hear Cartman's voice going "RESPECT MAH AUTHORITEH!"Grin

HandsOffMyRights · 19/11/2019 08:10

Yes, me too If
And then in the episode 'Cissy' Cartman identifies as female to use the girls loos and then demand his own private bathroom.
It's spot on they chose Cartman's character for that.

MForstater · 19/11/2019 08:18

Thanks for archiving @definatelygc. That URL gets flagged as dodgy by social media though

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/11/2019 08:29

I've linked to this article many, many times now. It seems to me to go to the heart of the matter. www.feministcurrent.com/2018/03/23/leftist-women-uk-refuse-accept-labours-attempts-silence-critiques-gender-identity/ It's an article by Meghan Murphy on Feminist Current about UK gender critical feminists vs identity politics. If you scroll down a bit she interviews Lucy McDonagh, who founded the Deptford Project to help working class women (like herself).

But during a discussion with Goldsmiths students about a community housing project, things blew up. Mcdonagh was verbally attacked by students after rejecting the new language being imposed on her community, called a “white cis woman,” then a “bitch and a “cunt.” A young male student tagged her in a post online arguing that the Women’s March should not allow women to focus on “the vagina” as it was “transphobic.” When Mcdonagh asked how he was defining “woman,” the man responded, “Anyone who says they are.”

This is when, she says, it all fell into place. “That’s what ‘self-identify’ means: anyone can say they are anyone… So, rich, privileged people can claim to be marginalized.” ...

theflushedzebra · 19/11/2019 08:41

So they're actually stating it out loud now! Any student can identify as black or disabled, as well as LGBT or "women" - surely this is madness.

And why just "women" ? Why not any "gender" you like?

I think we know - could it be because women have bursaries, political positions set aside from them (like black and disabled people) due to their disadvantage in society. Like born males gaining women's officer positions. Hmm

Needmoresleep · 19/11/2019 08:53

The three random take-aways for me were:

  1. It sounds like a seriously grim and toxic work environment. Well done Maya for first sticking it out and then fighting back.
  1. If John McDonnell becomes Chancellor Clair will presumably, be in demand as an advisor.
  1. The speccie wonk bit. The idea that it was acceptable to have a conservative view represented on a panel, but only if they were an unassertive male. Ie you show diversity of views but only if the "right" views will dominate. Heaven help you have someone with opposing views who might express them convincingly. Apparently nothing to do with the fact Maya is GC, and in an arena, tax law, where testing ideas and proposals rigorously would seem appropriate. Heaven help us if our Cambridge educated intellectual elite need the protection of their bubble in all areas of life. Barristers, who are supposed to enjoy a good argument - that is what they do.
OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 19/11/2019 08:53

I'm at work today in flat shoes, no makeup and wore a scarf previously worn by my DH to travel in, but am also in a dress and with long(ish) hair. I am surely the non-binariest of all non-binary so respect my pronouns: "Tits"/"oi you"/"Thingy, you know, Wotsit, it's on the tip of my tongue, yer one at the desk near the big office" - and no, 'Thingy' will not do, please use the whole nomenclature or you are literally erasing my identity.

popehilarious · 19/11/2019 08:55

Wait, so that's it? Those two people's testimonies form the entirety of their argument for firing someone? But where's the actual argument?

HavelockVetinari · 19/11/2019 08:55

@MForstater good luck today!

popehilarious · 19/11/2019 08:56

Someone should tell Clair that "speccy" is ableist

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/11/2019 08:59

Sightist even. Clare is lucky that themselves don’t need glasses. Speccyophobe.

Joisanofthedales · 19/11/2019 09:12

Good luck Maya

Needmoresleep · 19/11/2019 09:13

But Clair does wear glasses.

If they were not interestingly non-binary, they might well fall under the description of "speccie wonk".

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/11/2019 09:15

Brilliant article Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g thanks for linking

Can’t think how I’ve not read it before

tooyoungat40 · 19/11/2019 09:18

Another day of not getting any work done. The testimony so far has been jaw-dropping. But, as entertaining as it is for us at home, my heart goes out to Maya for whom it must be very draining and stressful. Very best wishes for another revealing day in court to you and your team.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/11/2019 09:18

But perhaps Clair’s glasses are not real glasses to correct Clair’s vision. Perhaps they are trendy clear lenses to enhance Clair’s woke appearance.

Callmejudith · 19/11/2019 09:23

Good luck today Maya. We are all behind you.

Pepvixen · 19/11/2019 09:23

I think speccie was referring to the spectator. I interpreted it as a reference to James Kirkrup.
