I saw Sammy and Sophie's interaction on twitter about this. I fully support Sammy Woodhouse, she's absolutely right. It would be great if that club got closed down, it's sleazy and degrading. For anyone saying 'they'd lose their jobs,' I think it shows we have a serious problem in society where many jobs open to women are not secure or well paid enough for them to survive and thrive independently. It's depressing that the most many women can get paid is in jobs like stripping - it shows that young women are still valued the most for their bodies above all else. I can't imagine many of those young women working there would choose to work there if they were offered flexible, well paid work in other industries. In fact, I am certain 'sex work' pays better than a lot of other jobs precisely for this reason - men know women would opt out of it completely if better work was available.
If Sammy stood for election in Rotherham I think she would get elected but I have no idea if that is something she'd consider.
It's awful seeing privileged young women, a few years out of school calling abuse survivors 'trash.' I hope the people of Rotherham see Janice's article and vote for someone else.
Also, I saw someone up thread imply that 'Sheffield feminists' supported this club staying open. I'm pretty sure it's the opposite. There is a group called Sheffield Feminist Network who regularly post gender critical/radical feminist information on their facebook page and they also hosted Michele Moore's talk. It would be good if we could stop referring to people like Sophie as 'feminist' when her actions are not in line with actual feminism, as it sends the confusing message to people about what feminism actually stands for.
