Some depressing comments.

Very depressing where these women get it, my daughter spouted some tripe about empowerment to me just the other day. Angry

Just putting in a link to the recent epic thread on Spearmint Rhino:

“ Very depressing where these women get it,”

But whatever they hear and wherever they hear it,they can look at it and draw their own conclusions.

Siameasy · 09/11/2019 15:34

The FB page comments are predictable and SWERF is used. I think by a man 🙄 I cant bring myself to comment because of my blood pressure am not sure half of them even read the article

Janice Turner deserves an award for her sterling efforts in the field of feminism.
Talk of strip clubs is depressing, so maybe I can give you a wee cheer up with tales from the resistance. My DD, who is feisty, old school gc feminist, and martial arts trained, often has to walk down Lothian Road in Edinburgh, which is notorious for these vile dives.
She accosts punters coming out and demands their price to do a strip for her, aggressively asks if they’ll do “extras” and loudly comments that they must be up for it if they’ve just been a customer of such a club!
She says they scuttle away mortified. She wishes there was a legal penalty for their exploitation of women, but public humiliation is the best she can inflict on them!

I saw Sammy and Sophie's interaction on twitter about this. I fully support Sammy Woodhouse, she's absolutely right. It would be great if that club got closed down, it's sleazy and degrading. For anyone saying 'they'd lose their jobs,' I think it shows we have a serious problem in society where many jobs open to women are not secure or well paid enough for them to survive and thrive independently. It's depressing that the most many women can get paid is in jobs like stripping - it shows that young women are still valued the most for their bodies above all else. I can't imagine many of those young women working there would choose to work there if they were offered flexible, well paid work in other industries. In fact, I am certain 'sex work' pays better than a lot of other jobs precisely for this reason - men know women would opt out of it completely if better work was available.

If Sammy stood for election in Rotherham I think she would get elected but I have no idea if that is something she'd consider.

It's awful seeing privileged young women, a few years out of school calling abuse survivors 'trash.' I hope the people of Rotherham see Janice's article and vote for someone else.

Also, I saw someone up thread imply that 'Sheffield feminists' supported this club staying open. I'm pretty sure it's the opposite. There is a group called Sheffield Feminist Network who regularly post gender critical/radical feminist information on their facebook page and they also hosted Michele Moore's talk. It would be good if we could stop referring to people like Sophie as 'feminist' when her actions are not in line with actual feminism, as it sends the confusing message to people about what feminism actually stands for.

If that was my comment it was worded badly, obviously the Sheffield feminists were against the club licence.

That is brave. Could you thank her personally for me? I once had the misfortune to stay overnight in an apartment near Lothian Road, right across the road from a strip club. The place had the most unpleasant menacing atmosphere and the men hanging around the place were disgusting. It's great that a young woman is bringing them up short with what they are doing.

Babdoc · 09/11/2019 18:20

I'll pass on your thanks, Driechdrizzle! DD takes no prisoners, she's quite scary, with an ultra short haircut and a muscly build from weight training. Her Krav Maga teacher was impressed with how hard core she was (and I think he was ex army!)
I think the training did wonders for her self confidence - she has a definite "Don't mess with me" vibe, and helps out with security at feminist meetings and marches in her spare time.

Hmmmnnnn

"Ah the lovely @Soph__wilson. Now standing as an MP for Rother Valley. Funny how she's deleted all her tweets mentioning SWERFs and TERFs because she knows her views would affect her chances of election. Never apologised though.

Owns 2 houses at age of 23 though. For the many... t.co/5rWKILiZrI "

"she also voted for the destruction of 27000 healthy mature street trees, labelled campaigners "middle class NIMBYs" (funny, those tweets have been deleted too), & supported wrongful arrests & intimidation by SYP."

twitter.com/sheffieldlamby/status/1189849463151566849?s=19

"and she's VERY active in Sheffield Momentum. Part of the little S6/S10 cabal. And attended the Chris WIlliamson meeting for which he got suspended for...one of those cheering & clapping loudly.

Although she missed the tiny bit where he was racist, apparently..."

I know she probably won't get a reply, but well said, Sammy:

"I’d like to ask Rotherham MPs Sarah Champion & John Healey of their opinions of the Labour Party’s selecting of Sophie Wilson to represent Rother Valley?

The Labour Party has yet again shown embarrassment to Rotherham. @SarahChampionMP @JohnHealey_MP"

CarolCutrere · 09/11/2019 22:50

Is Labour still going with this vile woman as a candidate for that seat?

quixote9 · 10/11/2019 02:14

Babdoc, your DD made my day. Tell her I love her! And good on you for raising such a fighter.

Babdoc · 10/11/2019 08:31

Thanks, Quixote9! I'll pass that on. I'm an elderly feminist (Spare Rib reader from the 1970's!) and, as a widowed single parent, always raised my DC on feminist principles. Glad to say that neither of them take any shit from the patriarchy!
