Professor of Public Engagement has a locked twitter account

It looks like Alice has locked her Twitter account which is really a concerning thing for someone who is supposed to engage with the public. I'm assuming it's a temporary thing as she seems to have referenced Glinner and is probably avoiding an onslaught of rational and reasonable comments.

Did anyone see what she said?

She certainly loves digging!

I get that being spammed by GC women includes fewer rape and death threats than the alternative, but really I couldn’t debase myself as she is doing.

Even if I got it wrong to begin with, the thousands of logical, scientific replies would bring me to my senses. And even if I was a base coward, I would stop saying anything rather than jumping in with all three feet and pretending I could talk to clownfish, like some latter day Dr Doolittle.

And of course none of us can move without Glinner to co-ordinate our thinking for us. Men are obviously better at that sort of thing!

If she would step out of her ivory tower and mingle with the plebs as part of her public engagement, she'd discover this whole 'humans can change sex' malarky doesn't wash with the vast majority of the population.

I am really disappointed in how superior she seems to think herself to all us thick non-scientists, based on her tweets.
Ime the good academic communicators make you feel they are talking to you as an equal. She really seems to despise her audience.

Is Dr Janina Ramirez the one who did a documentary on Julian of Norwich? Historian type? If yes, I quite like her,though I do recall chuckling at her very emphatic use of the word 'woman' at every possible juncture. Seems quite appropriate in hindsight.

FondofBeetles response was amazing! Has Alice really got a background in molecular biology? I find this hard to believe. She digs holes and I heard that she;s an anthropologist. Do you need ALevel Chemistry to do that? If not, it shows.

Alice has a medical degree. She really ought to know better.

tbh though, medics are often clueless. I know this as I used to stand in for a colleague when medics phoned in for (NEQAS accredited) lab results on their patients. We used to have a right laugh when they didn't know what an ENA was, and had to be told what diagnosis they should give.

Glinner wasn’t the first to think up the idea of two sexes. Pretty damn sure his mum knew that one. Give the woman credit.

Although it's hard to follow the twitter thread with all its gaps now, it would seem our dear jolyon has agreed to meet with Emma provided she writes him an acceptably nice email. He acknowledges her qualification but notes that he will likely side with sporting bodies on the issue of men in women's sports regardless. So nice to know that someone in his profession has such an open and enquiring mind.

He also says that none of this wider debate is about whether someone happens to be born with a penis or a vagina. JOLYON, THAT IS EXACTLY AND ONLY WHAT IT IS ABOUT.

He also says that trans people have difficult lives. And I expect some do. And I'd venture to suggest that in many, if not most, cases that is because supporting these people in the belief that they are actually the opposite sex is what is making their lives hard and is not the solution to their underlying problems.

I'm thinking forward to the day she finally had to admit she got it oh so very hugely entirely wrong.

Nevertheless: if she locked her tweets as a result of the kind of abuse and threats I've seen GC women get, she has my absolute sympathy.

If it was more because she was getting her arse handed to her (politely but forensically) by the glorious Beetles and Co, then I question if the Public Engagement Professor gig is really for her.

I mean, yes she has engaged a lot of people in scientific discussion, but mostly them explaining basic science to her...

She sounds like a bellend for thinking that way in the first place or selling herself out so far that she denies her own medical training and evidence of her eyes.

A friend invited us all to go see Alice Roberts in a local theatre.

If it’s her professor role twitter account that goes with her job (..not personal to her, if she left the job the account would be run by the next person to hold the job..) then she should continue to use it because it’s not personal to her, but blocking anything abusive obviously.

If it’s her own personal Twitter she can do what she likes, if she is getting flak for having silly views. I wouldn’t criticise her for that.

‘Professional’ - I don’t think she’s had any SM/PR training then.
