Lib Dems actively deterring GC women

Today I emailed the Lib Dems expressing an interest in joining their party.

I stated no one should receive discrimination or abuse for their transgender status but explained that I am GC and I asked if there was room for GC women in the party.

I received the following response:
Thank you for getting in touch. Whilst we appreciate your interest in joining, you should be aware that the Liberal Democrats are a trans inclusive party, and we have made it clear that we fully behind trans communities. As liberals we champion everyone’s right to live the life they want. By the sounds of your email it appears that your values are not aligned with ours so we are probably not the right the party for you.

I am flabbergasted. I didn't expect that I would have to believe that humans can change biological sex in order to be a member of the Lib Dems.

I am so disappointed. I was going to vote for them in the GE (passionate Remainer) but I cannot if this is their response.

There is no one to vote for. I am lost.

Maybe we should all email in to ask if they don’t want GC feminists as members, do they not want people who don’t believe humans can actually change sex to vote Lib Dem at all?

drum123 · 10/11/2019 12:31

Good idea dumonde, a mass email might make them realise this is losing them votes. Maybe a mass email to all the parties' membership departments?

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/11/2019 12:40

It's very worthwhile mentioning that by stating that twaw, the default is tmam. And this then ignores the specific sex related medical needs of TM, as they have female anatomy.

(Or however it's best to state this in less clunky fashion.)

It's easy to get sucked into debating are tw women, while ignoring the fact that TM are discriminated against as soon as you state that tw 's rights are women's rights. As actually, in practice, TMs 'rights' are women's rights.

Ds1 is a member of the lib dems

He is very much transpeople shouldn't be discriminated against, as far as i know he uses preferred pronouns etc...but he absolutely knows that humans can change sex

Maybe the lib dems want him to stop being a member

Newuser123123 · 10/11/2019 12:57

I think I'm going to email to see if they need to remove me from the party. If anyone wants to join me let me know

RedToothBrush · 10/11/2019 13:03

Don't be stupid. He's male.

RuffleCrow · 10/11/2019 13:44

Politeness is neither here nor there.

You can politely remove women's sex based rights and deny reality -

-Or you can do it wielding a baseball bat in a T-shirt that says 'Kill Terfs'.

The result is exactly the same.

DuMondeB · 10/11/2019 13:49

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best way to send the question?

I don’t even know who the candidate is here (safe labour seat).

DodoPatrol · 10/11/2019 13:58

I know our local candidate. I'm going to ask him whether this has been misreported (!), as it looks like they either do believe people literally change sex, or believe that trans people SHOULD be discriminated against.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/11/2019 14:22

Saw this in The Sunday Times today.

Newuser123123 · 10/11/2019 14:40

How about...

Do you agree that women have protected spaces (prisons, toilets, refuges, sports categories) because of the physical advantages and threats of men.

Are these threats and advantages ameliorated in any way by a small number of people who feel a disconnect between their natal sex and their gender identity?

If not, how is it appropriate for women's spaces to be opened up and made unisex?

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/11/2019 14:52

Isn't this discrimination on the part of Lib Dems on the grounds of belief?

Yes, now dying to know how many other political parties want votes but not those votes, and are, metaphorically speaking, drawing aside the hem of their robe to avoid contamination.

From female people with a grip on reality, who disagree with misogyny and homophobia. I swear you couldn't make it up.

How the hell did our political system ever get into this farcical mess?

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/11/2019 14:59

Now idly wondering about inquisitions at the voting booth. Please state your personal identity politics clearly with some kind of signed oath, and then you'll be told which parties may approve you and grant permission to vote for them. Your voting slip will be edited to reflect what permissions you've been granted.

That whirring sound is Mrs Pankhurst spinning in her grave like a jet engine.

RuffleCrow · 10/11/2019 15:06

Whoever's pushing this behind the scenes has zero interest in the rights of transexuals and 100% investment in keeping the left vote split and impotent.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 10/11/2019 16:15

Don't be stupid. He's male

Fair point

Though I'm not stupid i know he’s male...I've changed his nappies and everything Grin

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 10/11/2019 16:20

I spose that comment makes me transphobic

Ds2 is always telling me to not assume his gender

(Childs always on a bloody windup)

ErrolTheDragon · 10/11/2019 17:30

The comments on the Times piece seem to be mostly re the OP rather than Challenor, and overwhelmingly against the Lib Dem's position on this.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 10/11/2019 18:39

Well, that's my vote for the Lib Dems gone.

joaniwalsh · 10/11/2019 18:56

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere I believe Joani Walsh picked it up.

corlan · 10/11/2019 19:10

Just emailed the Lib Dem candidate for my area, asking her thoughts on this. It's a marginal seat ,so I'm wondering if her response might be more equivocal!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 10/11/2019 21:01

Joaniwalsh Excellent. DontBuy says Good Spot

I've just seen on the BBC News channel that they are having Ed Davey on at 5.30pm and they are asking for questions to put to him.
I wonder if this would be a good opportunity to look at the questions he didn't have time to answer during his webchat and give him another opportunity to answer them. Wink
Contact them by using the hashtag #BBCYourQuestions, emailing on [email protected] or text 61124

Newuser123123 · 11/11/2019 17:29

Have just been told by the membership team I am still welcome as a member (having detailed my views) I asked them to follow up so I'll keep you updated.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/11/2019 17:31

Left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing then. Another reason not to vote for them.

PocketDictionary · 11/11/2019 20:59

Or they've had a panic meeting? It's 4 days since OP received their response & since been in the press. Seriously doubt there's been a complete cultural change in the party in one weekend.
