This rapper (who I’ve previously never heard of) takes his 18yo daughter to the gynae clinic once a year (on her birthday! What a treat!) to check her hymen is still intact. As a kind of aside at the end of the article, he also makes lighthearted about how he is maritally raping his wife. Lovely!

People on the comments are calling this assault? Is it? Whatever it is it's bloody unethical. Surely as a Dr you would see the coercion a mile off, and how she feels forced into signing a waiver because she's scared of her dad.

I certainly see it as abusive. He is forcing a woman to have an intimate exam. I can only imagine the consequences of her refusing. Reading this, how proud he is of himself for doing this, is shocking to me.

Well that's grim. No young woman should be forced to discuss the state of her hymen with her father, regardless of how entitled he feels to have that discussion.

Surely this has got to be illegal. I don't just mean a civil offence, I mean a criminal offence, by both the dad and the doctor.

The reason I think the doc is just bullshitting the father to make him go away is that he obviously was trying to explain to mr. misogynist that the hymen-virginity association is a myth, but dad doesn’t believe it. So what do you do ethically?

Well you do the annual pelvic exam and make sure daughter understands that a doctor can not determine if you are a virgin or not in a gyn exam. Then you provide the usual documentation, and you tell dad “results are consistent with virginity”. Which is technically true because any result is consistent with virginity
