High profile GC people being silenced & general election

I've been pondering how many high profile people/celebs have been shut down on Women's rights or have backed down in the face of abuse - which shows how contentious the issues are and/OR how vocal TRAs and their allies and those who just don't get it (yet) are. I thought it would be useful to collect a list, to demonstrate just how prevalent the shutting down is and therefore how hard it can be to speak up, particularly with upcoming election and evidence collecting for emails to candidates/parties. Before I start thinking of who, useful or not useful?

I'd find that useful OP.

Well I have just been blocked by yet another 'celeb' for stating views they would rather not hear.....so I would also like to see a list of people who have refused to listen. Because I WILL want to remember who was on our side if they decide to try and rewrite history.

JK Rowling liked something GC I think and then had to apologise?

Floisme · 05/11/2019 19:13

Off the top of my head:
JK Rowling
Alison Moyet
Robert Webb

GrinitchSpinach · 05/11/2019 19:36

Ha! mrsSnippy, sorry that got you blocked, but thank you for fighting the good fight.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 05/11/2019 20:18

Jenni Murray
Rose McGowan

  • trying to think of those who've been forced to public recanting and abasement.
HuckfromScandal · 05/11/2019 20:21

James Dreyfuss
Ricky Gervias
Martina Navratilova
Sharron Davies

Not sure any one of them has backed down, but they have all had a whole heap of abuse flung at them!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 05/11/2019 22:09

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Germaine Greer

Alison Moyet - virtually left Twitter after a barrage of abuse. She tried to civilly debate people but gave up. It was something to do with a letter and Stonewall?
Marc Almond - tweeted something about men's loos/gender neutral loos and pronouns then swiftly deleted them - said he just wanted to get it off his chest.
John Boyne - author, hounded off Twitter for a bit BEFORE his book 'my brother's name is Jessica came out - TRAs objected to the title without having read the content. He was on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show in the immediate aftermath and I recall Graham Norton saying something like “ooh you're going there” or “hmm, good luck” or suchlike.

Simon Fanshawe, although not a celeb is high profile and I think his intervention may be a game changer. His name is being mentioned on gransnetSmile

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/11/2019 08:11

No one on Huck's list has backed down as far as I'm aware.

Jolyon Maugham dipped the tip of his little toe in the water and removed faster than the speed of light when he was piled on.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/11/2019 08:13

Do we need a separate list of people who haven't backed down? Simon Fanshawe is wonderful, so measured, polite and reasonable. I respect him enormously for what he's doing now. It can't be easy. I would hope that some of his fellow co-founders of Stonewall might give him some public support, but I haven't seen any evidence of it.

HDDD · 06/11/2019 12:35

Agree on the separate (probably relatively small) list of those who haven't backed down.

Martina Navrilatova is GC

ScrimshawTheSecond · 07/11/2019 09:07

Julie Bindel
Hadley Freeman

BadgertheBodger · 07/11/2019 09:11

MrsSnippy excellent work!

How anyone can ally themselves with Tatchell of all people is beyond me. I read just that tiny screenshot you posted of his “movements based on love” and I thought oh bleurgh he’s at it again trying to normalise adults raping children. Grim as fuck. Anyway, thanks Matthew Wright, now we see you too!

HDDD · 07/11/2019 14:26

Maybe it is only a tiny minority who have spoken and backed down then?

Martina Navratilova
Hadley Freeman
Julie Bindel
Sharron Davies
James Dreyfus
Simon Fanshawe
Ricky Gervais
are all in the speak out/speak up/ SPEAK LOUDER camp
