Why two men dancing together but not two women dancing together? The woman had to have a male partner. Why does the BBC persist in telling us men can woman better than women!

OP posts:
TinselAngel · 03/11/2019 20:35

Oh God. Am I a bad feminist now because it gave me twinges? 👀

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 20:59

Lol Tinsel

Personally, I think there could be 'optics' issues with two women dancing actually. Two men is more challenging to norms because it's still not as acceptable for men to dance as it is for women in some parts of society, and two men dancing often causes discomfort among those who are troubled by homosexuality.

Two women dancing, however, seems a fairly common titillation trope. I mean, I enjoy dance as art, and it can be phenomenally exciting and I'd be quite happy to see same sex couples of either sex, but I can see an argument being made for men to actually break the ground on this one. Fuck knows it would be great for them to actual do some culture change heavy lifting for once.

TinselAngel · 03/11/2019 21:01

I could watch those two break the ground all day.

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 21:01

I haven’t watched it yet, but I can offer a salve in the form of the DecaVitas:

Most teachers of partner dance can both lead and follow and it’s good to showcase that - would be more interesting to see a woman lead a man on Strictly though, or at least it would to this dance nerd’s eyes!

Tinsel, have you ever seen the footage of Artem leading James in Kara’s Rumba choreo?

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 21:04

🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Dangerfloof · 03/11/2019 21:07

Radical thought here, why not both.
Am bloody sure they could find two women to partner and obviously not a problem finding two men as they have done.

TinselAngel · 03/11/2019 21:09

Tinsel, have you ever seen the footage of Artem leading James in Kara’s Rumba choreo?

I have now! Shock

Squidsister · 03/11/2019 21:14

However in Michelle and Giovanni’s pasa doble, she started off in the female role and then switched to a male role, so another matador. So I think they are trying to mix things up in other ways. I like the two men dancing together, I thought it worked well.

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 21:21

This group routine from last year has male/male and female/female partnerships from about 1.30

Karen and Katya 😍

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 21:45

And this one from 2014 - same sex partnerships quickstep around 1.34

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 21:51

They have been doing it for a while, in fits and starts.

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 21:53

Although, tbh, I'm mainly concerned at the utterly bizarre fact that the judges have repeatedly kept Mike Bushell in...

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 21:56

No doubt Mike will have the coveted Blackpool exit.

Fingers crossed anyway

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 21:59

I mean Katya is very good value as a choreographer, but damn. He's a bit like watching the barrel chested frogs from Flushed Away gambol and stomp about with jazz hands and gurning aplenty.

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 22:03

DH commented that there was a whiff of rickets about Mike’s Charleston basic.

TinaBarrow · 03/11/2019 22:03

Wow, those DecaVitas are incredible, thanks DuMonde

LeftHandDown · 03/11/2019 22:03

Strictly are apparently considering allowing same sex couples from 2020, so it may become more common in future.

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-7412947/Strictly-Come-Dancing-Bosses-FINALLY-allow-sex-couples-year.html

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 22:04

Quite. You get away with it in the Charleston maybe, but I was describing his ballroom Grin

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 22:07

I do like Katya though, her Matrix themed Paso (two words that most definitely do not belong together) last year was ace.

TinselAngel · 03/11/2019 22:08

the coveted Blackpool exit.

Is that a euphemism ?

FannyCann · 03/11/2019 22:10

DD says he looks so stressed all the time, we are both concerned he will collapse with a heart attack. Shock

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 22:13

Yes, Katya manages to pull entertainment and invention out of utter duds as partners. She's a bit like Anton, if Anton was a really talented choreographer as well as the running crap partner joke.

BeMoreMagdalen · 03/11/2019 22:14

(Sorry OP, I've managed to derail your rather more serious minded thread Blush )

DuMondeB · 03/11/2019 22:15

Slight digression but this is probably as relevant this video, one of my favourites, will ever be to the MN FWR board - 1939 footage of (mostly) women dancing together at the New York World Fair: m.youtube.com/watch?v=WB28EIKC4DE

FannyCann · 03/11/2019 22:15

I love Katya. She has a great sense of humour and is a brilliant choreographer. Plus a hard task master.
