I think this is a really good thread for seeing many of the questions that trans rights activists need to answer, all in one place.

Possibly useful to use with the uninformed/unthinking. How will they respond?

It seems to be more about established definitions society has, and their experience of moving through them in other peoples judgement, just by doing what comes naturally and instinctively

Come on.....Get with it......This has long been the goal of liberation movements: both the women's and the gay....

There is nothing new to see here......

*Or Joss is having that definition imposed on them, the definition of a trans woman is a biological male who lives as a woman8

No, that is the reality.....What you seem to be saying there is no such thing as material reality and that everyone can make it up as they go along........We can all legitimately 'identify' as things we are transparently not, and demand legal rights to accompany our identity. Even though identity, in itself, is not a fixed or static thing - and changes with time. Unlike Sex.

Trans people have definitions imposed on them by society, they dont invent these definitions

Honestly, when will this preciousness cease...We ALL have definitions imposed on us.....that is the central nub of all liberation movements.

You are putting the horse before the cart.......I cannot even believe that we are having this discussion. Material reality exists. The physical world exists. What exists in our heads is largely transient.

Last time Joss joined us on FWR, Joss explained that Joss thinks Joss is a woman because Joss 'navigates the world' as a woman, which means that a bloke once said 'love' when brushing past Joss.

There may be more to it than that, unfortunately, as a self-identified troll, Joss was quickly re-banned before we could try and get a few more snippets of questions answered. Shame.

Are endocrinologists considered to be experts about the existence of "gender identity" and its origins?

I believe the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) came out of the Endocrine Society originally.

Re endocrinologists: I've just been reading Alice Dreger's chapter about the campaign by people with DSD (intersex) against childhood sex reassignment and surgical mutilation - an area of "medicine" led by - yes, endocrinologists.

Basically it was the same line we see with regard to trans - right down to "these kids will commit suicide when they hit puberty if they don't have this surgery/hormone treatment". Plus an incredible discomfort with anyone who didn't 'fit' with sex stereotypes. It was even promoted as "we have to do this or these children will turn out to be homosexual/lesbian".

Endocrinologists have form here. And things only began to change in this area around 2004ish, so very recently.
