BBC Springwatch launch pink bird boxes for Mums

Because Mums are the best ‘in our little nest ‘. The non pink one for Dad’s is because they are ‘really good at things’. Same for grandads and grandmothers.

WTAF!? What are they saying to young naturalists??

I misread the title. Presumably the bird boxes are for birds, not mums. Smile

Perhaps birds also struggle with gender, like giraffes.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/10/2019 10:00

Because Mums are the best ‘in our little nest ‘.

Well what it actually says is "Because in our little nest you're the best mum in the world" and I fail to see what's wrong with that. No different to a "You're the best Mum in the World" Mothers' Day card really.

BlouseAndSkirt · 30/10/2019 10:05

It is the contrast with the Dad’s one that is the issue.

What this says is Mums stay in our little nest and is the best in our little inward looking context, Dad’s are capable of putting a bird box together because they are really good at practical tasks like that.

Clearly aimed at kids (or people buying them on behalf of kids) giving them as gifts to parents.

So telling another generation of potential young naturalists / scientists that Mums are valued for being in the nest, Dads for building things and putting things together.

What on Earth about a bird box needs gendered packaging?

Yes it’s grim.

The bbc love gender shit though.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/10/2019 10:18

What this says is Mums stay in our little nest - No it doesn't.

Dad’s are capable of putting a bird box together - The contents of the box are the same.

What on Earth about a bird box needs gendered packaging? - it's just pink.

£3.75 delivery for my mums best nest in a pink box. Only one left

😢

Jeez why pink box

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 30/10/2019 10:21

I had visions of the actual bird box being pink and was worried the birds would be put off.

JasonPollack · 30/10/2019 10:26

Grim.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/10/2019 10:27

Well, they obviously weren't that popular if they are selling them half price now.

PhrightomenaButterfly · 30/10/2019 13:07

I hate pink. I wouldn't want one.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2019 13:41

It's only the packaging which is pink...but...
Mums and dads don't need colour coding, we know what sex we are. And the difference in the message is another small piece of sexism. Mums are also 'really good at stuff like this ', whether they mean assembling flat packs and/or looking after wildlife.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 30/10/2019 15:05

Mums are also 'really good at stuff like this ', whether they mean assembling flat packs and/or looking after wildlife.

Indeed. Some of us mums even have serious flat pack addiction problems. Woe betide the man (or woman or child) who gets between me and a good bit of flat pack furniture.

BezalHell · 30/10/2019 15:54

What if it's a family with two mums? Do they flail around incompetently, looking for a man who is "really good at things"?

FlashesOfRage · 30/10/2019 15:59

Looks like the kind of accidentally offensive product they would invent on an Apprentice task 😂

It’s just a fucking bird box and they seem to have managed to fuck the marketing of even that up 👍👏

Ooooh I love putting together flat pack stuff. I have a collection of allen keys.
