Stonewall splits after being accused of promoting a 'trans agenda' at the expense of gay and lesbian rights

This is a Telegraph headline to an article that seems to be a slightly different explanation to the tweets about a new alliance being formed.

Does anyone have more info. ie a new Lesbian and Gay Alliance would be great.

But even better to know that Stonewall has split.

Quotes from article:

^However, following a meeting on Tuesday night - and amid an ongoing row about trans inclusion - the charity has divided and forged a splinter group.

The members of the new Alliance agreed, as part of a 20-point position statement, that
:homosexuality is same-sex (not same-gender) attraction;
lesbians are biological women who are attracted to other biological women;
sex is not "assigned" at birth but observed and it is not transphobic for lesbians to have their own spaces and institutions which exclude male-bodied people.

t also said that it has asked the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to investigate whether Stonewall, as a recipient of public funds, is “upholding its public duty to represent the voices of LGB people and facilitate discussion between different groups protected under the Equality Act".

An EHRC spokesperson said: “We have yet to receive a copy of this request.”

A spokesman for Stonewall declined to comment.^

Article at www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/10/23/stonewall-splits-accused-promoting-trans-agenda-expense-gay/

(I didn't know that the Telegraph has its very own trans activist reporting on their "journey" www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/gender-neutral-bathrooms-womens-prisons-time-trans-people-carried/ )

I know there is a thread about the proposal for a new Alliance but I wanted to focus on whether it is true Stonewall is splitting as this would be significant not only for the new alliance but in sending a message to funders etc., that they should be very careful about how they decide is THE organisation to represent any specific group)

A spokesman for Stonewall declined to comment.

Quite. They’re in an uproar. Politicians take heed and be careful with whom you invite to “consult.”

MrsSnippyPants · 23/10/2019 19:01

Please follow them on Twitter @AllianceLgb.
Full launch early next year.
They will be getting a monthly dd from me if they live up to their mission statement.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 23/10/2019 19:05

Well, I don't know, but a lot of people on Twitter seem very, very upset about it.

niceberg · 23/10/2019 19:06

Thank you. Glad this has finally come to bite them on the bum.

Was slightly unclear from the OP (to me anyway), but the Alliance arising from the split is the same as the Alliance that is the subject of the other thread (Simon Fanshawe et al).

aliasundercover · 23/10/2019 19:10

Split denied by Stonewall:

"Paul Twocock, Stonewall Interim CEO said: There is no truth to reports of Stonewall ‘splitting’, so please ignore the alarmist headlines.

These stories don’t refer to any current Stonewall staff or trustees. There is no equality for lesbian, gay and bi people without equality for trans people. We’re all united in our mission to achieving acceptance without exception for all LGBT people.’ "

Something's happening.

stumbledin · 23/10/2019 19:13

I think it is the same Alliance but my understanding is that it is being formed by people who have already given up on Stonewall.

Which is itself a powerful statement.

But it would have a further signifigance if it is true that there is an actual split in Stonewall. ie are Trustees formally resiging, are staff / volunteers resigning.

I think the Telegraph is mis reporting, but would have thought they would fact check before publishing.

I hate to say it, but the impact on funders etc., of currently involved trustees, staff, volunteers splitting from Stonewall, would be greater than those already estranged setting up a new organisation.

Ruth Hunt - who Julie Bindel claims doesn't believe most of the rubbish she's been talking for the last few years - would make up for an awful lot if she publicly supported Alliance LGB.

Creepster · 23/10/2019 19:16

I suspect Stonewall putting 99% of the population under the transgender umbrella, will ye nil ye, was the last straw for the founders of the organization that was created to advocate for Gays & Lesbians.

Thanks aliasundercover - your post wasn't visible when I started typeing mine.

It is very suspicious that stonewall haven’t appointed a new CEO yet. 🧐 Maybe they couldn’t find anyone as craven as Ruth Hunt 🤷‍♀️

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 23/10/2019 19:26

'There is no equality for lesbian, gay and bi people without equality for trans people'

But that just isn't true. It is demonstrably untrue as a statement. Obviously. It's like saying 'there is no equality for dogs without equality for cats'.

I can never work out if they are stupid or if they just think we are.

JoyceJeffries · 23/10/2019 19:29

They don’t care as long as the money keeps on rolling in.

Melroses · 23/10/2019 19:36

That's quite a name.

Yes it stands out.

Funny how these things are always getting lost...

There is no equality for lesbian, gay or bi people

Because of the way the paragraph lines split I read and digested this before I picked up on the rest of the sentence. And briefly thought that Stonewall were admitting that they weren't treating LGB equally to the T.

HandsOffMyRights · 24/10/2019 07:11

Mimmymum & Harrop are not fond of such an alliance:

Stonewall splits after being accused of promoting a 'trans agenda' at the expense of gay and lesbian rights
Stonewall splits after being accused of promoting a 'trans agenda' at the expense of gay and lesbian rights
Matereality · 24/10/2019 07:38

Harrop and Mimmy's contempt for the efforts of people like Simon Fanshawe, who has fought homophobia his entire adult life, is breathtaking.

BarbaraStrozzi · 24/10/2019 07:40

Harrow really isn't the brightest, is he? For a start, the legally protected characteristic is gender reassignment. And also, no one bleats about a diabetes charity excluding, say, cancer sufferers. It's kind of in the nature of single issue campaigning organisations that they do this. Their raison d'etre.

Want to start a charity for be-vulvaed and be-penised people who see themselves as feminine and feel they are sexually attracted to other people who see themselves as feminine, regardless of genitals? Crack on.

But don't whinge about people who view their own sexuality in terms of biological same sex attraction and who, historically, have come in for a huge amount of prejudice and discrimination based on that, for setting up a pressure group to defend their rights.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/10/2019 09:35

Sorry, no share token, and I can only read a bit of it! But Janice Turner is writing on this in the Times:

www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/stonewall-has-lost-its-way-on-the-trans-issue-hd3lw08wb?fbclid=IwAR0x4eD6poCl8reDQ-DMSkZ0JOASTzKfeWXRSIWFtZiFzfArQRCYVTtP744

Waterl00 · 24/10/2019 09:46

Harrop's message says it all really doesn't it. Everything, everywhere at all times has to have a trans person present or it's an illegal gathering. In the communist era, Russians traveling beyond the iron curtain had to always travel in 3s, and each person was tasked with spying on the other 2 and reporting them if they tried to conspire against the communist state or make any plans to escape. (I worked with them, this is true.)

Harrop and mimmimum remind me of those communist state infomers.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2019 09:54

Harrow really isn't the brightest, is he? For a start, the legally protected characteristic is gender reassignment.

And they're clearly not excluding trans people for being trans - Miranda Yardley is one of the members. Or maybe Harrop excludes people for being the wrong sort of trans?Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2019 09:56

There's sharetoken links to the two times pieces today on the other thread.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/10/2019 10:04

Thanks, Errol.
