I haven’t seen this in a thread but just wanted to register my absolute disgust at this video. What the fuck?

twitter.com/rights_info/status/1186284754825596931?s=21

Thankfully every single comment on the thread was negative and people were expressing their disgust.

I watched it but don't see any commonality between the two things. They could have compared prostitution with shop work and it would be just as (in)accurate. I could deconstruct point by point but can't be bothered.

If the Royal College of Midwives had any authority whatsoever I'd raise the issue with them, but they are so busy being nice ladies they never take any action on anything much.

louiseaaa · 23/10/2019 10:42

JHFC I'm speechless..........

HorseWithNoFucksToGive · 23/10/2019 10:46

Not looked at the film.

Did it give stats on how many midwives are killed by their clients?

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 10:48

It’s just awful to compare the two. Midwives are highly qualified professionals but typical to pick a job that nearly no men do. And no midwives are exposed to the risk of rape, murder and assault every time they go to work. It’s a disgrace that these woke-beards think they can legitimise their penchant for buying women’s bodies by comparing it directly to women giving birth. Fuck the fuck off.

OP posts:
Scarlett555 · 23/10/2019 10:53

Terrible video which doesn't even highlight a very tenuous link!

In fact the two professions are polar opposites. Midwifery is probably one of the few professions that isn't patriarchal while prostitution is designed to serve the patriarchy.

Thingybob · 23/10/2019 10:56

I watched it three times thinking I must be missing some obvious connection between midwifes and prostitutes.

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 10:57

That’s true. Midwifery is one area which is almost exclusively about women helping other women through something that only affects women (although there are some male midwives of course). But those twats can’t accept that. Let’s pretend that helping a woman deliver a baby is just like me rocking up and paying £100 for a ‘girlfriend experience’. Same principle, right? I think I will write a letter of complaint to the trustees of this organisation and to the charity commission. If others want to do the same, feel free.

Jesus

So 2/3 of midwives get sexually assaulted while working now do they? Didn’t think so

What the fuck is ‘rights info’ ?

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 11:26

A human rights charity! Set up to educate the public on human rights. It has 30k followers and was set up by a highly respected and highly wokebro barrister. It’s not some fringe group- it claims real legitimacy which is why this is so worrying.

OP posts:
BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 11:31

these are Rights Info's objectives

Struggling to see how the promotion of prostitution fits into them to be honest

Speechless Rights-info, midwifery and prostitution
ProbablyShouldntbut · 23/10/2019 11:36

Apart from everything else. It's wildly dishonest ... it says it is going to compare the two ... but of course it doesn't , because trying to do so would be farcical . So after a couple of soft focus images it just does a standard 'sex work is work so' thing.

I think its a bit of an own goal - the promise of a comparison with midwifery will get attention. A lot of hostility obv - but some genuine curiousity. Not doing it - but just banging their own drum is as likely to annoy the people they are trying to reach as influence them.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 11:39

Their 2018 income was £347k, so not chicken feed. comparable to Mermaids pre lottery grant actually

£335k of that was from trusts and foundations. They ain't no grass roots movement, that's for sure.

some familiar names in their donors, for e.g. The Paul Hamlyn Foundation ( Baron Hamlyn was known as 'The Patron' to Madam Lash and his foundation seems to spend his money in line with the attitudes that this suggests)

They have 9 members of staff, and their outgoings are mildly interesting - £93k (so 27%) of their income on 'consultancy'. what's that about then? not very transparent

BreakWindandFire · 23/10/2019 11:41

They are also TWAW and brook no dissent on that either. Tons of articles supporting reform of the GRA, insisting there's absolutely no conflict with women's rights.

They've been pushing a pro-sex work line for months.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 11:45

so if their objective is the promotion of human rights in the UK as set out in the universal declaration of human rights, the UN Conventions and Declarations, the European convention on human rights and the Equality Act 2010 - do any of those particularly focus on prostitution?

and how are they approaching 'human rights' in this context? is it the right to use prostitutes that they're particularly interested in?

BadgertheBodger · 23/10/2019 11:46

What really gets to me with such rank idiocy as this is that it has passed through the organisation

Someone who deals with their social media content has attended a meeting and suggested this as an idea. “I know! We’ll compare prostitution and midwifery because, y’know, it’s the same right? And we’ll make a video to put on Twitter which promotes the sex industry. We’ll also make a strange point about how DBS checks to protect vulnerable people are somehow preventing women from leaving prostitution”

Everyone else at the meeting: Yeah, sounds great, here’s some funding!

The rest of the world: What. The. Actual. Fuck Hmm

My area of work is training companies to make changes in processes and it often comes down to culture; it makes me worry for the world that there are so many supposedly legitimate companies, some of whom are training our public services like schools, hospitals and the police, who have a frightening lack of insight into the effects of the shit they peddle.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 11:48

Oh dear

rightsinfo.org/whats-a-nice-girl-like-you-doing-in-a-job-like-this/

RightsInfo has been funded to make an animation and an explainer film and commission a range of content to explore the research, work and campaign of the English Collective of Prostitutes in their research ‘What’s A Nice Girl Like You Doing In A Job Like This’. This collection of content will be released over the course of this week – and this page will be refreshed with new stories throughout the week!

“Because sex work is often presented as uniquely and inherently exploitative, we wanted to explore the experiences of other women at work” Watch this beautiful hand-drawn animation to find out more.

I really struggle to see how the promotion of prostitution fits in with their stated aims.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 11:51

this is more top down attempts to get ordinary people to swallow 'sex positive' queer theory bullshit

honestly, it's a scourge on society

Doyoumind · 23/10/2019 11:52

What a load of offensive shit.

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 11:54

I don’t think charities are meant to campaign for changes in the law so I wonder whether their films which are clearly aimed at trying to legalise sex buying could be seen as breaching that. Probably not but I am definitely going to put a complaint in to the charity commission and hopefully at the least it will cause these fuckers some administrative hassle. Misogynistic wankers. Any other ‘work’ where people were at risk of rape and murder, they’d be calling for it to be abolished. But not this because it serves their own interests

OP posts:
BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 11:58

from the end of that film

the first paragraph is completely fine, but a leap is made to decriminalization without any explanation. The Nordic Model would be a much better way to tackle the issues described

of course it would impact on men's freedom to pay to wank into a woman, so yanno, not something we should really be thinking about obvs

guidance on political campaigning for charities

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/610137/CC9.pdf

I think that film falls foul of this

Legal requirement: however, political campaigning, or political activity, as defined in this guidance, must be undertaken by a charity only in the context of supporting the delivery of its charitable purposes. Unlike other forms of campaigning, it must not be the continuing and sole activity of the charity. (Section 3.5 provides a fuller explanation.)

Here's information about how to complain about a charity

forms.charitycommission.gov.uk/raising-concerns/

you're supposed to raise issues with the charity first, so I shall be getting in contact with Adam Wagner via the rights info website in the first instance

LangCleg · 23/10/2019 12:34

Pimp lobby at it again, I see.

Thanks for all the detail on this thread.

TemporaryPermanent · 23/10/2019 13:34

Fascinating.

Why an animation, I wonder? Why not just film working prostitutes in Holbeck getting on with their lives, just doing their jobs, having sex with any man with cash, having fun with colleagues, talking to their line managers, just like midwives? Wouldn't that film be really beautiful and effectively show that sex work is totally just like any other job that women with agency choose to do?

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 23/10/2019 13:45

Good point Temporary

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 13:45

Thank you Bernard for all the information
