I haven’t seen this in a thread but just wanted to register my absolute disgust at this video. What the fuck?

twitter.com/rights_info/status/1186284754825596931?s=21

Thankfully every single comment on the thread was negative and people were expressing their disgust.

I normally have a lot of time for rights info but I am incredibly disappointed in this shower of shite.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 23/10/2019 14:10

I don't understand the comparison at all - is it meant to be because both "jobs" involves "working with someone's genitals"? Confused

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 14:18

The video doesn’t make the basis of comparison clear at all to be honest

It just comes across as two unrelated narratives being played alternately

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 14:19

Sonic it’s all a ploy to make prostitution seem no different to a busy shift in a hospital and that the only problem these women have is that the pesky law criminalises their work. That they’re in exactly the same boat as the midwife who also has to deal with other people’s bodies day in day out.

How about if we allow things like slavery too then? I mean some people might feel empowered by it and choose to do it so why not legalise it? It’s such a fucking dumb argument and it’s gobsmacking that people think that this is helping to promote human rights in any way.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 14:38

At least the tweet has been comprehensively ratio-ed

Really, what the fuck were they thinking? Some people simply cannot conceive of a world where women’s bodies can’t be bought and sold, can they?

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 14:45

Yeah, I mean they had about 4 likes from their 30k followers and literally every single comment was negative. Probably not enough for them to wake up though.

From what I understand in the video she started off sexwork part-time to pay off debts, but then got arrested and got a criminal record (sexwork is legal in the UK, but only if you work alone). Now with a criminal record and difficulty getting other jobs she has little choice but to do sexwork full time?

Didactylos · 23/10/2019 15:06

I think a rebuttal video from a feminist point of view pointing out the problems with this video contrasting the real life experiences of women could highlight quite nicely how prostitution cannot be compared with a profession like midwifery (violence, assaults, training, employment rights, pay, safety, PPI, PTSD, welfare conditions, ) and how inappropriate a comparison this so called 'human rights' organisation is trying to make.

Its also instructive they chose to make this really quite problematic comparison to Midwifery, the most female dominated profession and not for instance being a gynæcologist or probaly more likely urologist (who are probably a better comparison since they by necessity handle peen)
I wonder why?

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 15:34

Yes, and I am strongly in favour of decriminalisation of the women who do the work. It’s terrible that she should get a criminal record. Where I diverge from Rights Info and the Woke crowd is that I don’t think we should also sanction buying sex and that it’s just work like any other. It’s very very different.

Didactylous yes, it’s very telling. I await the next chapter- ‘what’s the difference between being a consultant trauma surgeon and a rent boy? Not as much as you’d think.’

Fraggling · 23/10/2019 17:18

Whole thing bizarre.

In other news, students working in sex industry to make ends meet is described as 'adult work' on the bbc no less, so expect all pro prostitution orgs to further gloss over what it actually means soon.

Fraggling · 23/10/2019 17:19

And yes this

Fraggling · 23/10/2019 17:19

what’s the difference between being a consultant trauma surgeon and a rent boy? Not as much as you’d think

NatashasDance · 23/10/2019 17:31

I can't begin to describe how much the euphemism "adult" has annoyed me for decades. Especially when coupled with "if easily offended please do not look/enter" or similar garbage.

Forgotthebins · 23/10/2019 17:53

Rightsinfo also published a video called "is there a human right to sex" which failed to mention consent. At all. Probably idiocy rather than malice but still bad. Adam Wagner is editing a legal reference book on prison law so I wonder what the impact on women's prisons will be. www.doughtystreet.co.uk/news/adam-wagner-appointed-consultant-editor-new-halsburys-laws-prisons-volume

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 23/10/2019 18:00

'is there a human right to sex?'

no

next?

Fraggling · 23/10/2019 18:01

They made an argument that there is a human right to sex?

Fucking hell.

Karabair · 23/10/2019 18:01

Men at the helm:

They don't see women as human. Lots of dodgy sleazy men in the human rights world.

Looking at first one he's retweeted this from the rights info page

'Of all the strange twists and turns that UK politics have taken in recent years, the sudden legalisation of abortion and same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland is perhaps one of the most unexpected'.

It hasn't been legalised its been decriminalised.

You'd think a human rights org started by a barrister would know the difference.

Fraggling · 23/10/2019 18:09

'Alex Feis-Bryce is the CEO of RightsInfo, and previously the founding CEO of National Ugly Mugs.'

Nuff said.

Karabair · 23/10/2019 18:14

Adam Wagner is at Goldsmiths. No surprises there either.

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 18:14

Well seeing as this stupid charity doesn’t even know the protected characteristics under the Equality Act, I am starting to doubt that anything they say is legitimate. They have very clearly misrepresented the law on their own website by replacing sex with gender. How the fuck can they be allowed to get away with this? Lawyers who specialise in equality law deciding to redraft the statute on their website to suit their own agenda.

No political motivation, my arse. I hope they get hauled over the coals. Why should they be allowed to claim charitable status?

Pota2 · 23/10/2019 18:15

Karabair the perfect place for him. Woke af but with rampant sexual harassment and misogyny going on. Symbolises his charity wonderfully.
