Yoga with Adriene - Redo of PMS Video

I’ve just seen the message in my inbox from Yoga with Adriene saying that she’s done a redo of her really popular ‘Yoga for Cramps and PMS for Women’ video to remove the reference to ‘Hey Ladies’ etc and make it all gender neutral, to be inclusive.

I actually just feel really sad now. I feel excluded as a woman, there’s nowhere that’s safe where I don’t have to consider men first.

It would more likely be trans men writing in though. Well that’s how I interpreted it.

TequilaPilates · 21/10/2019 00:05

That's fine, but it's not at all what yoga is about. And you'd probably find you'd get so much more out of your body and then your life with the acceptance.

I DON'T CARE. I don't want to find acceptance. I don't want more out of this body. I don't want this body at all.

You'll probably get there eventually, anyway, I hope for that for you. It's a blessing.

For you, not for me. So you crack on with your acceptance and I'll crack on with doing my best to change my situation.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:07

I don't see why, Marsha - some transwomen object to the word "woman" being used in the context of PMS, or anything to do with female biology, because it makes them feel excluded.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:09

Because her direct message previously said ‘they don’t identify as women’ but have symptoms

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:13

But it is true that certain transwomen have objected to using the word women when referring to female biology - for example Munroe Bergdorf asked women not to make the women's march all about female biology.

Floisme · 21/10/2019 00:14

I have to say, in this instance I can understand why *Tequila's annoyed. Lecturing someone about acceptance when they're describing their disability sounds unbelievably tone deaf and arrogant, no matter how well meaning.

Sorry to hear about your condition Tequila. We may not agree on much but in your shoes, I don't think I'd be searching for acceptance either.

TequilaPilates · 21/10/2019 00:15

Floisme

Thank you. I genuinely appreciate that.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:16

It’s a bit late for me to decipher that but in this instance I’m assuming it’s trans men writing in as she says they don’t identify as women. So whatever else trans women demand may not be the reason here.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:20

This is all part of the same trans advocacy - where certain activists are demanding that the word woman shouldn't relate to female biology - or it's transphobic. It's not just this video, it's anything bearing the word woman.

it's extinguishing the word woman as a biological category - XX, large gamete, pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding. All are under attack., because transwomen aren't this - and transmen are.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:26

There are some things that annoy the hell out of me, and I hugely disagree with, about the trans movement, and language is one of them. But I can’t summon the same feelings for this because she’s keeping up two options. I do Adriene but don’t get the emails, maybe the way it was written in the email would have had more of a negative impact than seeing her direct message I don’t know.

I do think it’s unfair to say who can and can’t do yoga though with some of previous responses. It’s all personal and you don’t have to feel a certain way about your body to do it.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:31

Why doesn't an attack on "what is a woman" annoy you? I agree, I'm pleased she's kept the original video - but can[t you see the nature of the attack here.

If you agree that not everyone who has periods is a woman, then you walk into the dangerous territory that the original video - using the word "woman" to describe the female biology of menstruation, is exclusionary, and saying women menstruate and have a uterus, and so on, is transphobic.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:36

Gosh it’s late for this but ok I don’t agree with that statement. I think they are women but are messaging in because of how it makes them feel and she’s responding to that. It’s not making me feel uncomfortable right now but like I said I didn’t get that original email.

It doesn’t make me feel attacked in the way someone calling me cough ‘cis’ which I can barely type as it gives me rage.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:41

Well I personally think the original video will come under attack soon too - for the reasons Ive stated above. Because this is what happens - the word women cannot be connected with anything connected with female biology anymore - because it's deemed transphobic.

You can choose to be angry with me for pointing this out - or with the people who have started this ball rolling by complaining about Adriene's videos.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:43

I’m not angry with you at all. That’s the thing I’m not angry. Maybe I feel more threatened when it’s men trying to occupy my space.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:44

They will, Marsha. Sooner or later.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:45

They'll tell you they're women though.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:47

When they do, and have done in other places, I’ll feel cross I’m sure.

I’ve been on other threads picking up on terminology by mn, not always but on some debates.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:49

That's ok then - it's just happening to other women at the moment.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:50

But this is this thread Zebra about Adriene

On another thread about that then I’ll stick to that

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:50

Long may that continue hey Wine

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:52

Oh fgs you can’t dictate what people post. Take care and all that

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 00:53

Honestly I see what people mean when they say people on feminism don’t listen. Have a debate. Try not to be sarcastic.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:57

Sorry, you've just basically stated you don't care until it affects you personally- what do you expect me to say??

This is absolutely an example of what's happening all over - an erasure of the word woman meaning anything to do with female biology.

zebrasdontwearbras · 21/10/2019 00:59

In case you haven't noticed, many women have already been affected by this.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2019 01:03

No I’m saying this does not make me feel angry in the way a trans woman occupying my space does. I read her direct message and thought ok keep both up good.

I’ll feel angry about other stuff even if it’s not affecting me personally. Of course I will. Like anyone else, but I am not going to boycott Adriene because I still feel she’s ok.

I’m sure there’s been some other stuff that has angered me about all this recently - general erasure by men of women - but can’t remember exact threads.
