For more than a decade I and a small group of lesbian friends ran a women's group based at our local women's centre and published newsletters and held events. The newsletters give an interesting glimpse into a lesbian and women's culture that I'm not sure exists any more since everything went queer and trans and unicorns and rainbows.
Women wrote to us (how very quaint that seems now), there were photographs and fliers and posters and quite a lot of material attesting to what, at the time, was a thriving and positive lesbian scene in our area. The women's centre eventually folded (partly due to the involvement of a transwoman who sent the BAME women and their funding fleeing) and when it shut down we took away a couple of boxes of lesbian newsletters and other material. They've been stored in my house for years. We've now been approached by someone who wants us to preserve the material by giving it to a LGBTQI etcetera history archive.
I really don't want to do this. I don't feel, in the current climate, that I want to entrust material that includes photos and names and an insight into what was a very special, life-changing, totally women-centred community to people who may not actually respect and value lesbians and lesbian culture. Are there any women-only or lesbian only archives that might be interested and that are committed to remaining strictly women/ lesbian only?
