Surrey police have been promoting their anti hate crime (which obviously i agree with, i dont approve of hate crime)

But i take it that hate crime isnt a term used for hate based on sex? This is there definition, it looks a bit equalties act based but with the omission of sex.

As I understand it, sex is not included in the list of characteristics for hate crimes.

Couldn't be - everything from white van man shouting abuse out the window to the multi million pound porn industry would become illegal and then men would be sad.

AbsintheFriends · 14/10/2019 19:40

Making men sad is totally a hate crime.

The most hateful in fact.

Grasspigeons · 14/10/2019 19:47

I see! I was going to report an incident that happened to my mum, where a man shouted at her for about 10 minutes on the train. The basic premise was she was a woman on a train in rush hour and women of her age had never worked (she was a nurse) so she shouldnt be there - but there was a whole heap of anti women stuff. She was very shaken. I saw the poster and thought ooh thats what happened to my mum but realised she wasnt a category.

I've noticed this also OP, on the radio etc (not a word about the biggest ever protests in London about something that impacts everyone but hey...hate crime!)

Report the sex based hate crime. Report it all. When they say they don't record it ask why and keep asking. I don't go out enough to really be ok the receiving end of anything too nasty but please all Surrey residents who have experienced sex based hate crime - report report report.

I'll be asking why it's not recorded as I have nothing to report for myself.

Inebriati · 14/10/2019 19:56

That was a crime, but not a hate crime or hate incident. Misogyny isnt included.

''something is a hate incident if the victim or anyone else think it was motivated by hostility or prejudice based on one of the following things:

  • disability
  • race
  • religion
  • transgender identity
  • sexual orientation.''

Everyone is protected except women, and lesbians presumably because they are women.

BarbaraStrozzi · 14/10/2019 19:59

God your poor mum, Grass. That's shocking. Flowers

Agree with PP - report it anyway, and keep asking them why it isn't a hate crime.

MrsWednesdayteatime · 14/10/2019 20:07

There was a push about a year ago to make misogyny a hate crime

There was general outrage in the press

The Equality Act only covers civil law, not criminal law.

Criminal law's not my thing but AFAIK the main sources of hate crime law are in the Public Order Act 1986, part 3A (religious and sexual orientation hatred only) and wrt sentencing the Criminal Justice Act 2003, part 12 (race, disability, sexual orientation and transgender identity).

They really should add sex. It's a glaring omission.

HandsOffMyRights · 14/10/2019 20:42

Last year West Midlands Police tweeted similar and then changed it after a complaint on Twitter, so that the second tweet didn't contain any 'characteristics'.
